"Sam has worked on many projects in our house. He is a master carpenter, who is professional, precise and reliable. He is always present on the job to make for smooth delivery. Aside from framing our unfinished basement, bathroom remodels and flooring install Sam recently built us a new deck addition and a Pinterest worthy pergola on top of it!"

"I refer this company to anyone. Our time is valuable and these guys were on top of it. Very nice and professional owner and employees! Great work and these guys did not stop until the fence repair was completed. They cleaned up everything they used. I am using this company to replace my deck and build me a sunroom. Excellent price for the work they are doing. Canâ t wait to see the finished project! I know it will look great! I would definitely recommend Lance and his team!"

"Daniel is very professional. He is a skilled carpenter and is eager to make his clients happy. I've had Daniel build a complicated deck, a patio, smoker deck, clean gutters, repair gutters, move plants, and more. I have recommended him to others and recommend him to you. Remember: don't assume anyone can read your mind and discern your vision or wants unless you thoroughly explain that to them."

"William came to my home very soon after i put the request in on home advisor on new year s day! After the rain ended he and his workers spent 4 days rebuilding my chimney due to the faulty home build. He showed me all of the wet and rotten pieces they replaced as they went along and explained everything they did. They also cleaned up the yard of wood pieces and nails and left no debris. I would definitely hire them again"

"Faustino and his crew did an incredible job! Carpentry and painting were of dry high quality. Very responsive in handling minor punch list items. Job site well maintained during work and cleaned up at end of job. Very fair price for work. I highly recommend them"

"Happy Handyman LLC in my opinion the best contracting company I have ever used. They installed a roof on an existing out of square building and did a magnificent job. Dealing with Tracy, the owner, was an absolute pleasure. Her crew was very knowledgeable, courteous, professional and respectful. I will definitely hire then again and am informing my friends of there excellent work. I recommend them to everyone!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.
