"Silva Drywall & Remodeling LLC, is excellent from start to finish. The owner was able to give me a same day quote, explained in detail the work that needed to be performed in order to make the repair. We were able to be scheduled quickly, and the representative arrived promptly and on time. The prep work even included covering the walkways so that I was not inconvenienced with having to roll up my area rugs. The work was performed in a timely and expedient manner and we could not be more pleased with the results. We had procured several estimates and Silva Drywall represented themselves in the most professional manner and their pricing was the most competitive. I can say with complete confidence that I do not hesitate to recommend them! We are already planning a bathroom remodel (we were pleased to be informed they perform tile work as well), and have full confidence the job will be done professionally, in a timely manner and the pricing will be on point. Five Stars."

"Three Stags Remodeling, Pedro Martinez and brother and friend, did a great job on multiple projects for me. They covered a large deck and covered a large patio at two different locations. Both covers were stained/painted. They also helped with several smaller house repairs. Each job was done well, all finished on schedule at a reasonable price. Pedro communicates well with customers. Thank you."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

The best tool for cutting a hole in drywall is a drywall saw. Its serrated blade and ergonomic design make it efficient for both straight cuts and more intricate shapes, ensuring clean and precise results in various drywall cutting applications.

Choose a drill bit that is the size of the screws of the anchors you will use. You aren’t drilling through metal or concrete—hopefully—so any standard twist, wooden or all-purpose drill bit will work fine. It’s also important to have a screwdriver capable of drilling through the drywall and into the stud. The good news is most available drills, even the older ones, can do this with no issue.

Plastering and skimming are two different techniques for finishing walls. Plastering involves applying a thick layer of a plaster mixture—typically containing gypsum, lime, cement, sand, and water—to create a new surface. This process often requires multiple coats and is used for repairing significant damage or creating decorative textures. Skimming, on the other hand, is a technique that involves applying a thin layer of drywall compound or joint compound over an existing surface to smooth it out, covering minor imperfections, small cracks, or uneven textures for a polished look. Plastering is generally more costly and labor-intensive than skimming. Although some people use the terms interchangeably, they refer to different processes and materials.

You should always hang drywall from the top down. Starting at the top makes it easier to create a straight, tight line between the ceiling and the wall. Any gaps that occur will be at the bottom, where they are easier to manage. You can either cut the bottom piece of drywall to fit the remaining space or cover the gap with baseboard trim. Additionally, starting at the top is physically easier, as you won't have to fit the top sheet into a tight space between the lower sheet and the ceiling, or try to balance the upper sheets on the lower ones while securing them.

It doesn’t matter which way you lay drywall, and you can choose to install it horizontally or vertically depending on the size of the wall and how tall the ceiling is. It’s easier to lay drywall sheets vertically if you have a taller ceiling, but laying sheets horizontally makes it easier to apply joint compound.
