"We've lived in our house about 6 years and we've never had matching keys for all our door locks. Further, we never had a key at all for our storm door. We called on the Flying Locksmiths to re-key all our locks. They showed up on time, worked quickly and efficiently, and within half an hour, we had four re-keyed doors and one shiny new key to rule them all.

There was a hiccup re-keying the storm door because the lock was proprietary. The Flying Locksmiths asked to take the lock housing with them to see what they could do. In the worst-case scenario, they'd have to order a new part but they'd try to re-key the existing door. By the next business day, they'd managed to re-key the existing lock. They swung by and had it installed in less than 2 minutes!

I'd recommend The Flying Locksmiths to anyone. It used to be that there was only one game in town when it came to Chattanooga locksmiths so you had to take what you got. Not anymore!"

"Jayson was on time and very professional. He explained in detail what was wrong with my locks and how he was going to fix them. He was very friendly and got all my locks changed in a timely manner. He told me the cost up front and that is what I paid. No hidden charges. I would strongly recommend Titan locksmith."

"Choice responded quickly but the insurance plan does not pay for all doors to be re-keyed unless you have very few locks. The number of locks covered by the insurance is determined by keyholes, not doors! (Read your policy!) You will likely have to shell out some money to have this essential new-home service if you have more than four keyholes. The locksmith they called was EXCELLENT and made all our locks completely functional. We will happily hire the locksmith again (R.L Locksmith LLC). We paid $201.81 (plus another $50 for some door re-alignment not included in the re-keying benefit) and Choice paid $100 for the job."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Lock bumping is a technique locksmiths use to quickly and quietly open a pin tumbler lock, typically found in most types of deadbolts. It involves inserting a specially crafted key, or bump key, into the lock and tapping or "bumping" it with a mallet or similar tool. The force applied causes the lock's pins to jump momentarily, allowing the lock to be turned and opened. Unfortunately, thieves also use this technique to break into homes. Luckily, products like a deadbolt strap will fortify your lock.

There are several ways to add security to a sliding glass door. To start, install a rod or deadbolt lock instead of the flip-lock that comes standard with most sliding glass doors. Add a sensor to the door and monitor any activity through your home security system.

Finally, installing shatterproof window film will help keep the structural integrity of the glass if it cracks.

Rekeying door locks yourself costs a fraction of what you would expect to pay a locksmith. On average, it costs between $50 to $100 to hire a local locksmith to rekey your house, though labor costs may vary based on where you live. For a DIY solution, you can expect to spend $11 to $25 on a rekeying kit.

Any type of dead bolt lock provides the highest level of safety for a single device. However, it’s also important to determine a lock's grade. Locks can come in either Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3, which indicates how durable it is and if it’s constructed solidly. Safety experts recommend choosing locks based on Grade 1, which offers the highest level of durability.

Keyless locks are often considered safer since they’re protected by passcodes instead of a physical key, making it harder to be picked. However, they are not infallible. And like all electronic devices, outdated models are more prone to problems and safety concerns. If you’ve experienced multiple lockouts in the past year, or your lock is responding slower than usual after you key in the passcode, it might be time to upgrade to a newer one. Even if your lock is working fine, you should still change your access code at least twice a year.
