"ASAP Handyman is excellent. He has done several projects for me--from repairing a hole in the roof of a shed (from a tree limb that fell), to installing a bidet, to setting up some complicated pieces of furniture. I plan to hire him for some carpentry and remodeling projects. Honest, on-time, knowledgeable, experienced."

"Fantastic design and construction. Sales rep was also wonderful in helping to be sure measurements would fit our clothes.... long hang, tall husband shirts and pants, shoe storage, etc. Even designed a landing for jewelry box, wallets, coins, and keys."

"Mr. Fred is highly experienced, a master of his craft, such a pleasant personality, very knowledgeable & so gifted. I replaced my exterior back door & installed a new door with frame. The threshold brace boards supports mounted under crawlspace, were rotted too. Mr. Fred replaced without any issues. He also installed a moisture barrier. Door was a special order & was measured professionally by HD & measurements, were not correct. Mr. Fred was very precise in making all adjustments needed. Door fits perfectly. I am very impressed with his work & craftsmanship of the project. He also has a high level of customer service skill sets & is such a pleasure to work with. I will definitely hire him for my next project too. Outstanding job & enjoyed our conversations!! You will not be disappointed hiring Mr. Fred. Project end result is amazing! I am so thankful I found Creative Design on Angieâ s List!"

"I called Patrick from word of a friend to fix my front porch, steps, hand rails, and columns. He did an amazing job!!! Very particular with his craftsmanship!!!! Will definitely be using him again. P.S. Mr. Patrick had an employee who made the remark “It’s fine they can caulk it” needless to say he was fired. Patrick makes sure his work is perfect!!!!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Whether or not it’s easier to cut wood when it’s wet versus dry depends largely on the type of tool you use and the wood you’re cutting. For example, a chain saw should still be able to cut through wet wood with relative ease, but it may be more difficult to maneuver due to the wood fibers sticking to the chains of the saw.

However, you might want to avoid cutting wood entirely when it’s wet if you’re pruning your tree. Sawing a wet tree that you don’t plan on removing can also encourage bacterial and fungal growth and decay.

There are several mistakes you should avoid when using butcher block countertops. Don't place hot pots or pans directly on the surface, as this can crack the wood and cause permanent damage. Avoid leaving wet items sitting on the surface, and wipe up liquids as soon as possible to avoid stains.

General contractors use subcontractors to complete specific parts of a construction project. For example, a general contractor might have construction experience but need a subcontractor to install plumbing lines in a new home.

Labor plays a significant role in the installation of butcher block countertops. Depending on who you hire, your location, the customization level of the project, and whether the wood is already finished, you may pay a professional between $10 and $150 per square foot to install a butcher block countertop. On average, expect the per-hour price to run between $60 and $100.

Before hiring a carpenter, the most important thing is to make sure they are properly qualified and insured for the job. It’s more than reasonable to ask your prospective carpenter for customer references, as well as about their licensing and insurance. You should also consider choosing a carpenter that specializes in your specific project area to ensure high-quality results.
