"I cannot rave enough about Professional Systems Design. Initially, they came to my house by chance, but Iâ ve had them come back several times by choice. My husband and I had just bought a house that was in need of many electrical repairs. Our home warranty company sent out Jeremy and his company, Professional Systems Design. I had a list of things I wanted done and Jeremy and his team were able to do everything, working with the warranty company to get as many of the projects covered as possible. What the warranty company didnâ t cover, the charge to us was very reasonable. Since that initial visit, Iâ ve hired Professional Systems Design several times to complete more projects because they are honest, proficient, personable, and professional. Jeremy, the owner, is extremely knowledgeable and skilled in his area of expertise. The team installed new ceiling fans, fixed and added extra outlets, replaced old lighting with recessed lights, installed a camera doorbell system as well as a new bathroom exhaust fan, just to name a few things they did for us. Whenever I had a question or wanted an opinion about how to best accomplish what I wanted to in a room, Jeremy had the answer. Basically, Jeremy knows his stuff! There wasnâ t anything I presented to him that he or his crew couldnâ t do. I have 100% confidence in Professional Systems Designâ s ability and integrity, and I HIGHLY recommend them!"

"Ashley made the process painless and easy. He communicated with me throughout the entire repair and even took the time to answer my questions as well. I’ve since added them for my annual maintenance to keep my generator working every time we need it."

"I recently had an electrical home inspection performed by Jimenez electrical contractors, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the service. The inspector was incredibly thorough, knowledgeable, and professional throughout the entire process. They took the time to explain every detail and provided valuable insights into the electrical system of my home. The scheduling was smooth and convenient. They also arrived on a timely manner. I highly recommend their services to anyone in need of a reliable and comprehensive electrical home inspection. They exceeded my expectations in every way!"

"Flawlessly!. George replied within 15 minutes and sent me a scheduled work time that day. I received text notifications that the work was being done and a call from the electrician while on the property. The next day, I had my required Corps documents in hand."

"The technicians were friendly and knowledgeable, but the poor customer service we experienced from the office keeps me from recommending this company. After mailing in the required 50% down, no contact was received from the company. We had to call and confirm our check was received and ask to be put on their installation schedule. The job was not completed on the initial visit due to lack of communication/miscommunication with the power company. Again, no one from Power Services contacted us to reschedule; when we called again to have the job completed, we were given a date of two weeks out. Dissatisfied with that, I asked to speak with company president Robert McMahon (who originally sold us the generator), and it took multiple calls and unanswered messages before I heard back from him. On the second installation attempt, the technician advised that he didn't have the right monitor for the generator, and thus a third visit would be necessary. That same day, we received a call from Mr. McMahon questioning why we did not give the technician payment for the remaining balance. We advised him that payment would be made as originally agreed-when the job was satisfactorily complete. The next week, the monitor was installed and the job finally completed."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
