"From the very beginning, Scott Gunter, the Hixon Company Representative, came to our home well prepared and with plans for an outdoor screened porch and to have a new roof installed. Scott delivered as he said he would, on time, and the best workmanship we could afford. Once here, theHixon crew went right to work. They were on time, quick, but yet, efficient. We couldn't be more happy with the roof. We did install a quality roof with architectural shingles. It was done in two days. There were many, friendly and efficient workers, all here at the same time. They worked very hard and were relentless in their efforts to please my wife and me."

"I called DeVane Roofing after noticing a small leak after a heavy rain. From the first phone call, they were courteous and responsive. Brad arrived on time, inspected the roof thoroughly, and explained exactly what needed to be done. The repair was finished the same day, and the price was very fair. It’s been a few weeks and no more leaks! I really appreciate their honesty and professionalism. I’ll definitely call them again if I need any roofing work."

"Excellent job cutting, clearing and hauling off some terribly overgrown bushes/branches from backyard. Hard working Elliots for sure. They kept at it in the rain and also between the rain till it was done. Excellent clean up afterwards which is rare. Friendly, polite and professional. They can use me as a reference anytime. Great job and thank you."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Most traditional lenders will not loan against a house with a leaking roof, and some lenders won’t lend against a home with a roof near the end of its lifespan. If the roof on your new home is in poor condition, you may need to have the seller offer a credit for a roof replacement after closing, or you can opt for a renovation loan—also called a 203k loan—to bundle the house and the roof replacement into one loan.

Tipping your roofer or their crew is not customary or expected, but it is always appreciated. It is entirely up to you whether you want to give them extra money for their work. If you feel they have done an exceptional job, a tip can be a nice gesture. As an alternative way to show appreciation, you can provide coffee, breakfast, drinks, or grab-and-go snacks like cookies or doughnuts.

Roofers most often use nails to fasten roofing shingles and other roofing materials. Nails have more holding power than staples and offer better weather resistance and longevity. However, it is possible to use staples instead of nails when installing a roof. Staples are less expensive, but not as high-quality.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, wood shakes and wood shingles have notable differences, primarily in their manufacturing and appearance. Wood shingles are machine-cut on both sides, resulting in a smooth, thin, and uniform product. In contrast, wood shakes are typically hand-split or sawed on only one side, giving them a more textured, natural, and rustic appearance. Due to these manufacturing differences, shakes are generally thicker, heavier, and less uniform than shingles. They are also more expensive. Homeowners seeking a more rustic aesthetic often choose shakes, while those preferring a more uniform look may opt for shingles. Both are installed in an overlapping pattern to create a durable, weather-resistant roof.

The lifespan of a torch down roof depends on the number of layers installed. A single-ply system typically lasts between 10 and 15 years, while a multi-layer system with two or three layers can last from 15 to 25 years. Although a multi-layer option may be more expensive upfront, it provides a longer service life. Warranties often reflect this, with about 12 years for a one-ply system and 15 years for a two-ply system. For context, this lifespan is shorter than other common roofing materials like wood or asphalt shingles, which typically last 20 to 30 years, with high-quality versions lasting up to 50 years.
