Small jobs welcome

"We have a deck over our finished sunroom. It has leaked at least 5 times in the last 10 years. Jeremy and his crew added a 4'x8' section to the deck and in doing so discovered why the deck has been leaking. The original shoddy workmanship done by the original builder was uncovered and found that a large portion of the deck was completely rotted. Jeremy and his crew did a fantastic job of replacing all the rotten components. Then they totally waterproofed the entire deck the way it should have been done originally. They put down all new porcelain tile and made sure it drained properly. They added new railings and a number of other cosmetic things that have produced a fantastic looking and wonderfully functional deck. I cannot say enough about the work ethic and incredible standard of pride in workmanship that every member of the crew demonstrated. Jeremy has been wonderful to work with. He has kept us completely informed along every step of the process. He is a fantastic person and has the kind of work ethic that reminds me of what makes America great. If I could give 10 stars for Quality, Ethical Standards and Genuine Concern for the job I would be glad to do so. We have two more projects to have done here at the house and I would not consider anyone else but Jeremy and his crew. Call Jeremy and I promise you will be as ecstatic with the results as we are."

"When I clicked send on the HomeAdvisor site to find a housepainter, within 5 minutes I received a call from Randy from RJM Quality Painting. He came the next day to view the job and work up an estimate. Randy's customer service is exemplary. He is punctual, courteous and knowledgeable. He provided a written estimate quickly. I requested copies of his GL and Workers' Comp insurance Certificates of Coverage, which he provided. I also asked for names and numbers of recent job references. Randy gave me a list and I contacted 4. Each prior customer gave high marks for Randy and his team. I hired RJM and the job was scheduled to start on or around July 5th, weather permitting. The pressure washing team arrived on the first day and got started right away. About half way through, they discovered a bird nest with 3 baby birds inside underneath a stairway. They carefully removed the nest and placed it aside to finish their job. When I arrived home soon after, they told me about the nest. I found that the nest had suffered some disturbance and got a plastic bowl with some dryer lint and placed the nest inside. We kept the nest safe until they were done washing the area. Then these two helped me construct a platform under the stairs where the nest originally was, so we could place the bowl with the nest there for the momma bird to find. Sure enough, later in the day mom returned and took care of her babies. I notified Randy that the painting of this portion would need to wait until the babies launched. Randy was understanding and said they would do so. The painters came and did an awesome job hand staining my cedar siding, and the trim on the house. The front porch and large rear deck, 2 dog ramps and the steps to the kitchen area were also done. Everything was beautifully completed with absolutely no damage to anything. Every plant and tree were carefully worked around. The crew also was very accommodating with regard to my pack of 5 dogs so I could get them out for potty and yard time throughout the day. The job was completed in very good time. The crew was hard working and generally started at 8-8:30 a.m. and worked steadily until 6 pm with only a short lunch break which they took here. In summary, I can say that hiring RJM Quality Painting was a great decision. From the customer service, to the quality, workmanship, professionalism and efficiency of Randy and his team was outstanding. It is not easy these days to find people who want to work. This team has a solid work ethic. They do what they say they will do and Randy is always available to the customer for any questions or concerns. I am impressed and have no hesitation recommending Randy and his team at RJM Quality Painting to any homeowner who is looking for a high quality job at a fair price."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

Yes, you can draw your own deck plans in many cases. However, you must know your local building codes and be familiar with carpentry principles. Even then, it's always best to run your plans by a professional contractor with experience building decks, whether you choose to DIY some of the build or not.

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.
