Quality over Quantity! I take pride in everything I build or replace, I don't cut corners and I don't like to be asked to cut corners, pride is in the Quality of work, not quantity.

Emergency services offered

"Everything went better than expected. Price was very reasonable and work I believe was much better quality than others offered. We had back porch enclosed and screened in, they came up with variety of options. The workmanship was excellent and communication with me as the work progressed was in a timely manner, especially with a few weather delays. They followed up in a few days and came back out to inspect again and also followed up with roof repair. Roof also was inspected and repaired without the hassle of tearing up material to find the leak. Discovered flashing just needed repairing. Told crew I would call them again for future projects and repairs if needed. Would highly recommend Bear Hands Construction, LLC hands down to anyone."

"I couldn't believe they could get me in so quickly. They were able to finish the whole project in one day and cleaned up after themselves (and even me). The crew is professional, customer oriented, friendly and helpful. I would recommend them to everyone. The good thing is that they do other work besides painting, which is very helpful to us since these days we need more help than before with chores and projects."

"After trying and failing to find a new lawn maintenance company for our new 3 acre property we tried Angie's List. Broco responded immediately and set up a visit the same day. After agreeing on a price for our 3 acre property they got immediately to work. Lawn looks great and I can't wait until they come back for some more projects around the yard. Looking forward to having Sylvess and his crew help me maintain the yard I've always wanted. Its so nice to have such prompt and responsive service. A rare thing these days."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. This addition helps the various wood boards contract and expand evenly throughout the years and reduces the chances of twisting, warping, and buckling.

It is recommended to clean your deck once or twice a year to prevent the accumulation of dirt, debris, mold, and mildew. The ideal times for cleaning are in the spring and fall. A spring cleaning removes grime that has built up over the winter, preparing your deck for summer use. A fall cleaning washes away messes from summer activities, preventing them from setting into the wood over the winter. The exact frequency can depend on factors such as how often the deck is used, its exposure to pollen, and whether salt was used on it during the winter. Regular cleaning helps protect the wood and its finish from damage.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.
