If your home has an existing forced-air heat system, you can add a central air conditioner to it. An HVAC technician can retrofit your forced-air heating system by installing an evaporator coil onto the furnace plenum, the box next to the furnace that draws in air. Once installed, the air conditioning coils use the furnace’s blower to circulate the air.

If your AC runs constantly, it could be due to a number of things, including a faulty thermostat, incorrect temperature settings, or broken equipment. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, or ASHRAE, sets the standard guidelines for air changes per hour in homes and businesses. If refrigerant levels are low, it can cause the evaporator coil to freeze up. Low freon causes a drop in pressure, which will make the coil too cold and cause moisture to freeze on the coil. Your system may be low on refrigerant because of a leak. 

Make sure to have maintenance performed twice a year, and contact your local HVAC technician if you suspect your system has low freon levels.

There are a few ways to determine if a vent is open or closed. You can inspect the vent and examine the position of the fins. If there are spaces between them, the vent is open. If the fins are flat and touching, the vent is closed. You can also stand under the vent when the system is running to see if you feel air flowing through it.
