"WOW pretty much sums up Jesse and his crew at Rock-It Stone! Jesse was on time for every appointment, came prepared to measure our kitchen counters and brought stone samples with him so we didn’t have to drive all over the city. He sent a quote before the day was over and gave us a date to replace and install our new island, countertop and sink. His work is meticulous, he doesn’t leave loose ends and he’s also a truly nice person (so is his nephew!). We are so pleased with his work in our kitchen that we’re having him quote us for bathroom work. We would recommend Rock-It Stone to everyone that needs home construction work. Well done!!!"

Stone Countertops questions, answered by experts

Your morning mug of coffee won’t instantly damage your quartz countertop, but it’s still wise to play it safe. While quartz can handle brief heat, repeated exposure can wear down its finish over time. Using a coaster adds a simple layer of protection and helps keep your surface looking fresh.

There are many benefits of granite countertops, but it’s not unusual for them to have seams—especially if you’re working with small slabs joined together. Seams are common on larger islands where the installer needs to use more than one granite slab to cover the surface. Luckily, because seams are normal in granite countertops, pros know how to hide them properly, so you’d never know they were there.

Porcelain is a relatively affordable, mid-range countertop material. It typically costs between $50 to $70 per square foot.

Compared to quartz, porcelain is slightly more affordable, as quartz generally ranges from $50 to $200 per square foot. However, lower-quality, builder's grade quartz can be similar in price to porcelain.

Compared to granite, the price can be similar, depending on the quality of the stone. While granite slabs can range from $50 to $200 per square foot, you can find lower-end granite in the same price range as porcelain. High-end granites will cost significantly more.

Porcelain is generally more expensive than laminate, acrylic, and ceramic, but less expensive than high-end slate, concrete, and marble. A key benefit is that porcelain does not require sealing, which reduces long-term maintenance costs.

If you have light renovation experience, you should be able to build your own countertop made from wood or laminate. These tend to be the most DIY-friendly materials, but you’ll need to be comfortable using a circular saw and taking precise measurements. When it comes to installation, leave anything that involves plumbing, electricity, or gas lines to the pros.

Yes, a granite countertop can be cut in place. However, learning how to cut a granite countertop in place is a lot trickier than cutting granite in an open, well-ventilated space. You’ll also need to protect everything in the surrounding area (like your kitchen cabinets and appliances), but even that might not be enough to prevent dust from getting stuck in tight spots. If you absolutely must cut a granite countertop in place, consider hiring a pro to get the job done in the cleanest and safest way possible.
