If you have ripples, wrinkled areas, or carpet piling up along the baseboards, these are telltale signs that your carpet is not fully stretched. Release the carpet from the tack strip along one wall and use a stretcher or knee kicker to stretch out the carpet before securing it again.

An Oriental rug should last between 50 and 100 years, on average, but yours could last much longer than a century if you care for it properly. There are many factors that affect the lifespan of an Oriental rug, though. Increased foot traffic, exposure to moisture, exposure to UV light and sunlight, and aggressive cleaning can all limit how long your rug will last.

Carpet tiles are less expensive than traditional carpet. The average cost of carpet installation is $1,800, or $3 to $11 per square foot. In comparison, carpet tiles cost $2.50 to $11 apiece and can often be bought in bulk cartons. Since you can more easily DIY carpet tiles, you may be able to save on installation costs, too.

Standard padding works like a sponge. It absorbs liquid, soaking up every drop of moisture that hits it. Moisture barrier padding does the opposite because it has a waterproof coating made of plastic film, rubber, or treated foam. It doesn’t absorb spills and keeps them on the surface instead, so you can clean them up before they damage your subfloor.
