"Got an estimate. Submitted HOA request after contractor could not access HOA website. Quote and plans were approved after I had to personally submit them. Received minimal communication from the contractor throughout the process. Constant ghosting and back and forth on rescheduling of install times and corrections. Original quote was not honored as they had made a “typo” saying we would get two gates but wasn’t drawn in the mock-up. Giving two stars because the work was eventually done, but not on time and not to the quality we would have hoped with multiple fence panels having gaps evident gaps or misalignments to the posts. An absolute headache inducing experience overall."

Installing a gate on an existing fence or alongside a new fence is usually worthwhile, even though it can be expensive. Side gates give you easier access to your rear yard, making the space more usable. More importantly, they can help keep your children and pets safe in your yard without compromising accessibility. Security gates are particularly worthwhile, as they have the added bonus of protecting your home. In case that’s not enough upside, installing a fence with gates usually boosts your curb appeal and property value.

While many gate hinges are often made of extremely durable materials, such as galvanized steel, they can wear out after many years. How quickly they wear out also depends on how much use they’ve endured. It’s also possible for the hinge screws to fall out, which weakens the hinge. Once a hinge wears out, it’s time for a replacement so your gate doesn’t start sagging.

Ideally, your gate would swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it's generally best for the gate to swing inward. There are exceptions, however. For example, if your property is on a slope, your gate may not be able to swing in.

Keep in mind that there may be local building codes that require your gate to swing inward.

Fence gates sag because they have no support on the latch side of the gate to help hold them aloft. A gate wheel fixes that problem by providing support for that latch side. Remember that the ground must be level in front of the gate so the wheel can roll freely when you open and close it. If the terrain is uneven or slopes, a gate wheel won’t work.

Electric gates have a manual override switch that detaches the motor from the opening mechanism. For most gates, this requires a key as a deterrent to thieves or trespassers forcing open your gate. Be aware that many automatic or electric gates are very heavy, so it may be difficult to close the gate if you are fine with manually opening it.
