"How can I explain how impressed I am with Chris and his team at CER Design Build? There are almost no words that describe the combination of craftsmanship, quality, speed, delivery and level of professionalism that this one company has managed to accomplish. I have dealt with many contractors and none have ever demonstrated the level of commitment nor expertise that I've seen with CER. I certainly do not desire to work with anyone else! Thank you Chris for your beautiful designs and helping to imagine my dream home; you have the team and ability to make this homeowner's dream a reality. Thank you!

"These guys ROCK!!!  Initially Barry came out in December 2015 and did the inspection which took several hours.  Barry is not afraid to get dirty.  He was inside, he was outside, he was in the crawl space.  He recommended that some additional testing/exploration was necessary.
The second visit Miko, his assistant came with, the two of them were again here for 4-5 hrs.  They had to cut a hole in the closet floor which involved cutting thru 2 inch pour concrete to access. They had to go buy a special saw and breathing masks (no charge to me).  Once they gained access to the area beneath the floor he was able to get clear pictures of termite frass and voids in the wood causing deflection and crushing of a load bearing beam on the first floor.  He explained in his opinion the ceiling of the first floor unit should be opened up to do a thorough inspection on all the wood beams. He put together a detailed, clear, and concise report which was submitted to the Property Manager, and the company that provides our termite warranty.  He also spent quite a bit of time on the phone with the Manager of the termite company who was attempting to dispute Barry's findings.  I received a follow up email from Barry detailing point and counter point.  He was able to effectively rebut each objection the pest control manager made as to whether the damage was termites.  The pest control manager was trying to say it was water damage.
The third visit was at my request to oversee the pest control manager and his contractor as they cut several holes in the ceiling of the first floor unit to look for damage.  Barry again was very proactive getting in there and taking pictures, pointing out to the pest guy and the contractor the voids, frass, and 3/4 inch difference from the floor/ceiling elevation at the outside walls to the center of the room.  Again we received a very detail, clear and concise report, that left nothing to be questioned as to the source of the problem.  Termites.  There was  no live termite activity as the building had been tented shortly after Barry's first visit in December 2015.
Barry's character and integrity is very refreshing in this day and age.  I would highly recommend him for any of your engineering needs, and Miko is a star when it comes to communicating and keeping you updated.  These two are awesome.
I felt the fees charged were extremely reasonable.  Trust me call these guys you will be very happy with their service.

"Overall, it was a great experience working with JCI. They knew we were in an insurance battle and prior to even receiving payment. They ordered the necessary supplies and got us onto the schedule. They were very patient and understanding. The work itself was conducted quickly, as cleanly as possible, with all the dust, and Better than even expected. New ceilings are up and painted and there is less and damage noticeable. Onto the next project! Thank you, JCI."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

In Sarasota, if you notice foundation cracks wider than a quarter-inch, doors or windows sticking after heavy rain, or uneven floors—especially in flood-prone areas—it’s time to consult a structural engineer. Issues like seawall erosion or shifting pilings are also common locally and require professional assessment. For minor cosmetic damage, a general contractor may suffice, but significant structural concerns need expert evaluation.

Helpful?

Before starting a structural engineering project in Sarasota, review local permit requirements, check if your property is in a flood zone or historic area, and schedule a soil stability test. Document your home’s current condition for insurance purposes and plan work outside hurricane season. Choose professionals experienced with Sarasota’s coastal conditions, and coordinate with utility companies to avoid service interruptions during construction.

Helpful?

Structural engineering projects in Sarasota frequently impact plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and drainage systems, especially during foundation or wall modifications. For example, foundation work may require rerouting pipes or adjusting electrical panels, while roof upgrades can affect attic ventilation. Ask your engineer to coordinate with other specialists to ensure all systems remain safe, efficient, and compliant with Sarasota’s building codes and flood zone requirements.

Helpful?

Completing structural engineering projects in Sarasota can noticeably increase your home’s value and resale appeal, especially when you invest in hurricane-resistant upgrades, foundation inspections, and flood zone assessments. Buyers in Sarasota often seek homes with reinforced roofs, updated foundations, and storm surge protections. These improvements not only attract higher offers but may also help you secure better insurance rates and stand out in the competitive coastal real estate market.

Helpful?

Combining structural engineering with other upgrades in Sarasota is often efficient and cost-effective. For example, pairing foundation repairs with flood-proofing measures or roof reinforcement with hurricane shutter installation can streamline permitting and minimize disruption. Coordinating these projects can help you avoid repeated construction downtime and ensure all improvements are compatible with local building codes and Sarasota’s unique coastal weather challenges.
