"I can’t rave enough about this company. Randy came out same day for an estimate. My husband and I thought we’d have to spend an arm and a leg but were pleasantly surprised by the actual price. Randy even installed the drainage for the driveway (included with the original estimate). Communication is outstanding; Randy texted me and called me with whatever questions he had for me and was available to answer the numerous ones I had for him. The guys sent almost a whole day grading the driveway and getting in level and another day and a half paving the whole driveway (not a small task, I assure you!) 10/10 would recommend!"

Customers say: Quality work

"We needed a circular driveway installed. Lots of grading and ild concrete and gravel removal. They demoed, grade and installed the forms all in the same day, quick and clean. They tamped the grounds and got it all ready to be poured. Pouring took about 4 to 6 hours and those guys worked very hard and fast. The concrete truck driver cleaned up the street after pouring making the street look clean as it was before the pour. They finished the concrete and installed expansion joints where needed. Took a 3rd day for all the forms to be removed and cleaned up. The driveway looks beautiful and the work is top notch. We used 3000psi fiber mesh concrete and the final product is very strong. I would highly recommend Terrance@Low Cost Concrete for any of your concrete needs."

"We had watched Southern Brothers perform this work on one of our neighbor's property for months and were impressed with the work ethic and attention to detail of their staff. Recently we contacted Dakota and reached an agreement with them. The work they have performed to date has confirmed our opinion of them. They are committed to customer satisfaction, responsive, willing to expend a little extra to do things the right way and their quality is superior. Everything you want in a company. Our property has never looked better."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time. Your professional may lengthen your road to create switchbacks if the slope directly to your home is too steep, as there are regulations for maximum road slope. The drainage system will help prevent runoff from the higher side of the slope from damaging the asphalt or concrete. Keep in mind that building a road on a slope isn’t a good DIY project, as a lot can go wrong.

When comparing installation costs, asphalt is often less expensive upfront than concrete. Asphalt prices typically range from $7 to $15 per square foot, while concrete can range from $3 to $18 per square foot. However, long-term costs should also be considered. Concrete driveways generally last longer (up to twice as long) and require less maintenance, which can make them more affordable over their lifespan. While asphalt has a lower installation cost and is easier to repair, it requires more frequent maintenance, such as sealing, which can add up over time. Therefore, while concrete is more expensive initially, its durability may offset the cost in the long run.

Costs range from $3 to $7 per square foot, depending on the area size and project scope.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

It’s best to weigh the pros and cons of each material and decide on your priorities for your driveway. Gravel won’t be an appropriate choice if your driveway experiences heavy traffic. You’ll find that you need to level and top it off regularly, which could make the material a much more expensive option.
