"Great! I contracted with Capps Roofing to repair a leaky roof and also replace two skylights. As the repairs progressed, the leak and damage was more extensive than anticipated. The workers were cordial and kept me informed of their progress. I ran out of extra roof tiles and Capps was able to match my existing tiles almost exactly. As they were replacing my skylights, the workers noticed and were horrified that some minor debris had gotten into my home and promptly came in to clean it up as they apologized profusely. They also kept the exterior of my home cleared of debris at the end of each day. I have used Capps Roofing for almost 25 years and will continue to do so. They may not be the least expensive roofing contractor, but I can always depend on the quality and guarantee of their work as well as friendliness of the workers."

"Excellent! From the estimate process through the final walk around, ever person I was in contact with were professional, timely, and clearly knew what they were doing. Roof looks great, clean up was great and at completion, I pointed out a couple of minor items which they resolved on the spot. I even noticed a small tear in a window screen after they left, they had a screen repair guy at my house the same day. Not the cheapest out there (I got three quotes), but you get what you pay for (including a 15 year warranty which no one else came close to). Cost included replacement of 2 skylights, which we are thrilled with. Highly recommend them."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

There are four main types of lighting used in homes: ambient, task, accent, and decorative. Within these categories, there are a number of fixtures to choose from including ceiling-mounted lights, floor lamps, under-cabinet lights, track lighting, and more.

Choosing the fixture that’s right for you depends on your home design and the area you’re looking to illuminate.

Professionals repair or seal a skylight by inspecting for damages, resealing any gaps with appropriate weatherproofing materials, replacing cracked glass or seals, and ensuring the frame is tightly fitted to prevent future leaks and ensure proper drainage.

Yes, you can add blinds or shades to both roof windows and skylights, but roof windows tend to have more options available. Retractable skylight shades are popular on both options for added privacy, light control, and heat reduction, although they’re more expensive than manually-operated blinds or shades. If you have a roof window or skylight set in a high ceiling, a motorized or solar-powered skylight window covering is probably your best bet.

Skylights are the most likely windows to leak if installed improperly, so there are a few questions you should ask any skylight installer before you hire them:

  • Do you specialize in skylight installation or only windows in general?

  • Do you offer any kind of warranty for the installation?

  • What recourse do I have if the skylight leaks shortly after installation?

  • Do you have references I can speak with?

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Are you licensed and insured?
