"I purchased a great older home with Clay broken roof plates pointed out by the Home Inspector, Henry pointed out other items on the roof which should be attended to for the integrity of the roof. The job was completed in 3 days from the time Forrest Roofing Company was contacted. Thank You Henry and your experienced hard roofer workers, This was very important to our family. Greg R."

"They did a fantastic job. My wife and I are very happy with the color of the roof and the work they did. They were very accommodating with a color change of the drip edge. Bob was great at communication through the whole process and Tom saw everything through. I wanted to give a shout out to their roof lead (Sancho?). He was on top of everything and even stayed late to clean our driveway and pickup any leftover nails while everyone else was gone. They offer great prices and use peal in stick! I will be recommending Library Roofing CFL to everyone I know."

"John McCuiston and his crew did a wonderful job in removing a metal roof over shingles and installing a new shingle roof. This was a historic home and they were very respectful in maintaining its historic nature. John was very good and timely in communicating issues they found…needed new wood, etc. Cleanup was excellent and the new roof looks great."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, roof ridge caps are a necessary part of your roof system. Your roof ridge cap is at the peak of your roof, where two slopes of your roof meet. Roof ridge caps seal the seam and help protect your roof from water and debris, and because they’re pre-bent and thicker, they’re more suited to the job than regular roof shingles, which can break when bent.

Yes, shingles should overhang the drip edge, typically between 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch. An overhang shorter than 1/2-inch can allow wind-driven rain to get under the shingles and damage the roof deck or fascia. Conversely, an overhang longer than 3/4-inch increases the risk of shingles getting caught by strong winds, which can lead to roof uplift. Always check your local building code for exact overhang requirements in your area.

Furring strips (also called wood stripping) are not always necessary for a metal roof installation, but they are highly recommended and may be required by local building codes or the roofing manufacturer's specifications. There are several key reasons to use them:

  • Energy Efficiency: Furring strips, made of wood or metal, create an air gap between the metal panels and the roof deck. This acts as a thermal break, reducing heat transfer into your home and improving overall energy efficiency.

  • Moisture and Condensation Control: The air gap allows for better airflow, which helps prevent moisture buildup and condensation under the metal panels.

  • Structural Support: They provide a solid, even frame to which you can attach the metal roofing panels.

It is especially important to use furring strips when installing a metal roof over existing shingles. Without them, the roof surface can be uneven, and you will experience greater solar heat gain.

Yes, you have to get on the roof to cut a hole for solar tubing. It's not possible to complete the job from inside your house by simply cutting through the ceiling. So if you want to go the DIY route, remember to use safe ladder practices. If you’re not comfortable climbing on your roof to install solar tubes, hire a pro who has the tools and expertise to do the job safely.

Roofing material costs vary depending on the type of material you choose and whether you install it yourself or hire a roofer. Shingles are the most affordable option and cost between $70 and $400 per square, metal roofing is between $100 and $1,500 per square, and concrete tile is between $300 and $1,000 per square.
