"I hired Randy in October 2021 to remodel my 5th wheel trailer (It is my full time residence). We agreed on a price of $8000 for his labor. I was responsible for all supplies. He gave me a timeline of 1 month. He was eager to get started and assured me that I was the only job that he had on the books and that he wouldn’t take another one until mine was done. So I packed up everything and moved out so that he could do the job. Then it started… one excuse after another (car trouble/buying a truck/family problems/his nerves, anxieties/threw out his back/ and then out 2 weeks with Covid) he has missed more days than he’s been here, but along the way taking draws from the $8000 and assuring me that he’ll work extra to make up the time lost to get the job done so that I can move back into my trailer. I work very long days, I leave @ 6:45 am and it’s sometimes after 7:00 pm before I get back home. My schedule varies with me getting a day off during the week. That’s when I would check on the progress only to find that he had missed days (He was really good at checking in/ communicating with me… in the beginning, but after we got a few $1000 draws he stopped) or there were excuses like, “It’s not drying right or he had to go home to repair his tools (sprayer) there seemed to always be delays, excuses…. Now it’s January 23rd and He’s managed to draw $7400 and my trailer isn’t even close to being finished. I came home from work yesterday to find that he didn’t show up AGAIN (after telling me that he was going to be here early) so I called him to find out why he didn’t come and he went off on me! He told me to lose my attitude because he doesn’t answer to me… I’m not his boss! I told him that I was paying him to do a job for me & that was the definition of “boss”. He proceeded to yell & cuss at me and at that point I told him that he was fired! He’s supposed to come & get the few tools that he has here today. He told me that he would bring the police when I told him that I was going to keep his tools to try and make back the money that I paid him. I’m devastated. I was trying to do the right thing by him and gave him SO MANY second chances and benefits of the doubt. Now I’m out $7400 with no way to pay someone else to do the work left undone, my trailer is almost completely gutted and unlivable! If it weren’t for me staying in a small bedroom @ my dads house, I would be left homeless right now. PLEASE don’t let him do another job under your name, but most of all do not let him take advantage of another woman like me who has a big heart & tries to help someone who is trying to get started. I have pictures and would like to file a formal complaint."

The cost of home remodeling is $50,000 for the average homeowner. However, this cost can range anywhere from $3,000 for a small project to $170,000 for a whole home remodel. Factors like project size, location, and room type all affect your overall cost. For example, bedroom remodeling costs are one of the least expensive projects, costing about $1,500 to $5,500 per bedroom. However, a kitchen remodel has a significant cost range, totaling anywhere from $14,500 to over $70,000.
Yes, most states require home remodeling contractors to be licensed, and for good reason. Hiring an unlicensed home remodeling contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
The best time of year to remodel your home is late winter and early spring when fewer homeowners are thinking about projects and pros are more available. Also consider the type of remodel you want and plan ahead as much as possible. For example, the summer is a great time of year to update your fireplace, but winter is a better option for fixing foundations and building room additions.
There are a few things you can do to prepare for a home remodeling project to ensure a smooth construction process. Creating a detailed budget can help you stay on track, especially with the excitement of new construction or upgrades. It’s also beneficial to map out a remodeling timeline with your contractor to have clear expectations. In addition, you’ll want to prepare the space that will be worked on ahead of time—this could be tarping furniture or entirely removing belongings from the room.
Home renovation insurance, sometimes called “dwelling under renovation coverage” or “builder’s risk insurance,” helps financially cover any damages that occur during the home renovation process. While different from typical homeowners insurance, many homeowners insurance policies already include some sort of home renovation insurance or offer it as an additional add-on. While this insurance isn’t necessary for every home remodeling project, it’s best to contact your insurance company to verify if it’s needed and what your coverage options are.
