"Guy Brothers was a subcontractor for the project. The job site was an active residence with pets, but the job site was left a mess with nails, metal shards, insulation, and other construction debris every day. Workers left food scraps and containers in the yard. Underlayer board precision was fair. Did not replace the rotten siding under the main electrical panel; this was a decision of the primary contractor and not of Guy Brothers. Minimal cleanup after the project was finished."

"Professional, prompt, exceeded all expectations. When your spending large amounts of money you want things done right and these guys did just that. Wood siding requires an air gap behind it to allow water to drain out, and for air circulation and venting to allow humid air to escape and keep the material from rotting due to moisture. 

You can calculate the required square footage of siding you need by measuring the height and width of your home’s rectangular exterior walls. For the triangular-shaped gable walls, measure the height from the ground to the tallest gable point to make sure you have enough for good coverage. Once you have combined the totals for each wall, add another 10% to account for wasted materials. It’s also good to have extra siding on hand to tackle wood siding repair down the road.

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

Stucco is considered a type of cladding because it includes a built-in ventilation layer, a weatherproof membrane beneath that, and, often, a layer of insulation to improve building efficiency. The multiple layers of stucco—the scratch coat, the brown coat, and the finish coat—also create a more complex building membrane, so it’s more accurate to call it cladding. However, homeowners and contractors alike refer to stucco as siding.

While you can perform minor siding repairs or even install it yourself over small areas, it is generally best to hire a professional siding company. Siding installation is a time-consuming and complicated process that requires specialized tools and experience.
