"They were very efficient in their work, answered all of our questions, as we like to understand why things are done a certain way. Provided us a solution that we had not considered to prevent future flooding of our back yard and patio. Years of multiple sod installations and soil had to be removed/moved to create the right elevation (below the elevation of the patio, which makes perfect sense VS our thought and intent was to provide drainage to below grade. Which probably would have caused other issues with the water. May have cost more than our idea, but well worth the investment if it is truly a long term/permanent fix. I guess we'll see when we get our first big rain! But feeling confident in success. Thank you to Jeff, Paul, Kevin and Edgar. Great team."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

There is no standard depth for burying a septic tank; they are typically buried anywhere from 4 inches to 4 feet underground. The final depth depends on several factors, including the depth of your main sewer line, the height of the bedrock, soil type, local regulations, and the property's landscape. If you plan to grow grass or plants over the tank, a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches is recommended. Deeper tanks can be more difficult to locate, but a septic professional can help find it for you.

Most residential basements are 8 to 10 feet deep. You can dig deeper depending on building codes, but it does become more difficult. You’ll likely need to install stronger foundation walls and additional supports to handle the increased load. Depending on the water table, you may also need a water management system. Clay soil can support a deeper foundation than sandy soil. A structural engineer will be able to tell you the maximum, feasible depth.

Depending on the severity of the freeze and the method used, thawing frozen underground pipes can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Applying heat directly to the pipe using heat tape, infrared lamps, or hot water jetting can speed up the process. However, patience and careful monitoring are key to avoiding pipe damage.

Consultation with the local government helps identify necessary permits, avoid project delays or legal issues, and protect project integrity.

In the United States, a depth of 36 inches (three feet) for underground water lines is the accepted industry standard. This depth varies from location to location based on local conditions. In areas with colder winters, they may be buried deeper to prevent frozen well water pipes : This is usually at least six inches below the frost level. The International Plumbing Code calls for a minimum of 12 inches below grade.
