"I cannot say enough good things about Southern Acres! I wish I could share before/after pictures of the excellent work they did at my house. Like many others after the devastation Helene inflicted, my yard was damaged beyond recognition....Five 40' trees down, limbs, bushes uprooted, etc. Travis, Jake and a small crew worked from early morning to late afternoon (non-stop except for a brief lunch break) to scrape out the debris. They cut back, trimmed, edged, and removed a huge trailer full of yard waste. They then put out new pine straw (rolled, the way I like it) and blew porch, walk and driveway. The transformation was nothing short of incredible. All the while, they were pleasant and professional. The price they quoted was fair, and they more than met my expectations. Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

The local climate and major weather events, such as storms or flooding, can also extend the project's timeline, as can any holds ups in the permitting process.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.
