Customers say: Quality work

"Highly recommend Woodworks Cabinetry. I did not shop around on prices based on other reviews, so cannot evaluate that. However, it seemed reasonable for all the work done. They revised the floor plan in my kitchen, moved door opening and retiled from foyer through open concept dining and kitchen to hallway and bath. Everything went smoothly. Subcontractors for ceiling repair, electrical and plumbing were excellent and obviously respected the guys from Woodworks. Woodworks employees were very respectful, understanding and patient. They were accommodating to my times. Great company to work with."

"Randy is the best. Great to work with and will always give you his time and expert advice. Kitchen: cabinet refinishing and tile backsplash--outstanding. Living area: installed wood flooring--perfect. His work is impressive. Randy was also an advisor and spent a lot of time helping us with design ideas and picking out the best materials for the job. He is creative, innovative and exacting. Jared Eckensberger is an expert at woodworking and also did a lot of trim work throughout the house which came out to perfection. Everything exceeded our expectations and we highly recommend RH Eckensberger, Inc."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Some states require carpenters to be licensed to perform forms of carpentry, such as framing. The license requires a certain amount of experience and to pass an examination. In states that don’t require carpenters to be licensed, they must be licensed as a contractor if they work independently rather than solely as a subcontractor under a licensed builder. Use Angi’s contractor licensing tool to find out whether a potential carpenter is licensed in your state.

No, you do not usually tip a carpenter for their work. However, if you’ve been very happy with the level of service and quality of work, a 10% to 20% tip would likely be accepted with thanks. If you’re not sure, it can help to discuss the carpenter’s policy or preference for tipping before beginning the project.

While the Arts and Crafts movement inspired many architectural elements, the primary styles from the time include Craftsman, Tudor Revivals, bungalows, and Mission homes. You'll see elements of these styles in homes, churches, museums, and schools—particularly Country Day schools from the era.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.
