"Ryan did a great job on our home and deck. He was even willing to come on a Sunday so the house would look good for our Thanksgiving guests. I would definitely recommend Gainey Pressure Washing."

"A fantastic experience! They came out during the coronavirus craziness and did a thorough and professional job. My neck was on the line due to the extreme skepticism constantly emanating from my wife and I was therefore understandably filled with trepidation. Brandon was in frequent communication via text so that all I had to do eventually was leave the pool door open. The deck now looks fabulous, the gutter crud is gone and you can actually see through the pool enclosures (which were looking pretty nasty). The price was reasonable as well. Will hire these guys again in a heartbeat."

"These guys seriously rock! They came out early, were very efficient, used quality materials, and built a gorgeous deck and fence! The were extremely careful about details and made sure the gate swung just as smooth as could be. Really solid, nice people who know their business well. Please see the attached photo of their beautiful work!"

Deck Maintenance FAQs, answered by experts

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Yes, an elevated deck can increase a home's resale value. Homeowners can expect a 65% return on investment from the cost of a second-story deck installation. For example, if you spend $5,000 to install a second-story deck, that deck will add $3,250 to the value of your home.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

The cost to repair a deck is between $900 and $3,500, depending on the cause and extent of the damage. For example, fixing a sinking deck caused by pest damage can cost between $200 and $600, while replacing sinking boards costs between $500 and $4,000.

No, your deck will not rot under artificial grass as long as it is installed properly. When installed correctly, the artificial grass features a drainage system that prevents rotting. Simply laying artificial grass on top of the decking without proper installation will not lead to an effective drainage system that prevents rotting.
