"Had these guys add 850 SQFT to my home. I could not recommend them enough. Process went faster than expected and they helped out dealing with permitting in Miami which was a plus. I highly recommend them and I did not have any issues!"

"One of my patio door blind had fallen off and needed to be reattached. No big deal. David repaired my blind. Was not able to make them equal in length. I asked if he could reverse blinds so front side was out facing. He didn’t want to do that. He left me repaired but not happy. He also wanted to be paid cash."

"Varela Design finished the project within the deadlines. They were very informative and patient.  The plants were selected just as we requested. They were constantly giving us updates during the process of the projects and were very considerate. Upon the selection of the plants and design spent numerous hours with us to make sure we were happy with all the details.  I would definitely work with them again and recommend to anyone who needs landscape design, deck building services or pool construction.

Awnings FAQs, answered by experts

Besides the type of awning, you’ll need to choose the type of cover. Your awning installation professional will review your options with you, including availability and costs. The types of covers you can choose from include:

  • Wood, which is durable but can be damaged easily by rainwater and fire

  • Cotton offers flexibility, weatherproofing, and easy cleaning

  • Canvas is highly durable and is a good choice for retractable awnings

  • Metal is sturdy but is prone to rust

  • Polyester is easy to clean and is a more breathable option

  • Polycarbonate is highly resistant to UV rays and is difficult to damage

Acrylic, polyester, and vinyl are common options. Choose based on durability, UV resistance, and style.

Stainless steel and copper are the most durable and will probably last the longest, especially when you compare them to fabric awnings. Steel is the most popular if your budget isn’t a top priority, but some people prefer copper awnings over steel because they are lighter, which makes them easier to install. Aluminum offers a more budget-friendly metal awning option that is still attractive and offers some durability, especially compared to fabric.

Yes, you can install an awning yourself, and it can be an excellent DIY project with immediate benefits. This is most feasible for smaller, pre-assembled units. However, awnings are often heavy and awkward for one person to handle, so you should always have at least one helper. If you have difficulty lifting heavy objects, professional installation is recommended to ensure proper mounting and durability.

To ensure the installation process goes smoothly, it's wise to ask a potential pro several questions. Key topics to cover include:

  • Licensing and Insurance: Do you have a professional license and insurance to perform this work? This is crucial as installing an awning into a home's exterior can be a complex job.

  • Cost Estimate: What was the price of similar jobs you've completed? Awning installation costs can vary based on size, design, and location, so this helps establish a general price range.

  • Project Timeline: How long will this project take to complete? Getting an estimated timeline provides peace of mind, even though unforeseen hurdles can occur.

  • Building Permits: Will I need a building permit for this project, and who is responsible for obtaining it? An experienced local contractor will be knowledgeable about local rules and regulations.

  • References and Portfolio: Do you have references from previous clients or photos of completed projects? Speaking with past clients and seeing previous work can give you insight into their experience and the quality of their work.
