Whether you should remove the roots of a dead tree depends on whether they’re damaging nearby areas. For instance, if the roots continue to grow near sidewalks, driveways, or the foundation of your home, they can cause damage. Pruning trees during the summer can be a bad idea because the new growth will take place during the hottest months of the year, which can stress your tree out. The goal of killing and drying out a tree stump is to prevent that from happening, as well as make the stump easier to completely remove.

Unless it’s dead or dangerous, think twice about cutting down a tree in your yard. They’re good for health, well-being, wildlife, and the environment. Plus, local authorities often have regulations prohibiting the removal of trees, especially protected species or individual trees with historical value.
