"Mr. Pagán was on time, friendly, very professional and neat during the entire process. He explained the products being used and answered my questions. I have had many compliments on the final work and have already let friends and family know who to call for their cleaning needs."

"Southern Rust Woodworks has the best custom built products around. I have several pieces he has made for me, and I get asked all the time who did them and how to contact him. He can make anything you want! Or if you donâ t have an idea, he has great ideas himself. My house is basically a Southern Rust Woodworks showcase. Love all my pieces and they are excellent quality. Love all his products!!!"

"I met Eugenio Guerri at one of the home shows here in South Florida in Dec. 2010 and asked if he did recaning because I had an old, weathered (but very comfortable) rocking chair that needed recaning and some repairs. He came to my home in Miami after the home show, gave me an estimate for recaning, repairing and refinishing this 100 year old wooden rocking chair, and took the chair with him, giving me a January/February 2011 finish date. In January he called me and delivered the chair. He had completely taken it apart, stripped it, carved a new spindle to replace a missing one, recaned, cleaned and refinished the chair after putting it back together. It's beautifully done and now I don't have to worry about falling through the seat while rocking. Apparently Eugenio and his wife pick up and deliver all over Florida on a regular basis. He's very pleasant to deal with, the work is well done (I saw other refinished items in his delivery truck, as well as my finished chair), and delivered the promised results within the time promised. I would definitely use him again and recommend him to others needing refinishing/reupholstering work done."

"We used Jeremy to replace some wood siding on our house and weâ re extremely pleased. He was professional, friendly, and was even willing to educate me along the way. The final product was very well done and the price was more than fair. I would definitely use Jeremy for future products!"

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

The average cost to reupholster a piece of furniture is around $720, with most projects falling in the $380 to $1,150 range. The final price can vary significantly based on several factors. These include the size and complexity of the furniture, the cost of the new fabric (which typically ranges from $50 to $70 per yard), and hourly labor rates (often $40 to $100 per hour). Additional factors that influence the price are the piece's current condition, its age, whether it needs other repairs, the number of pieces being reupholstered, and your geographic location.

To safeguard your furniture and upholstered items, it's best to use plastic wrap or specially-made plastic sofa covers. However, you should avoid wrapping wooden furniture in plastic if you plan on storing it, as plastic can trap moisture and warp the wood, plus it may damage certain finishes. In either case, old blankets or moving blankets make excellent alternatives. For protecting delicate glass table tops and mirrors, bubble wrap is always a reliable choice.

Reupholstering an old or antique chair can be worthwhile if the frame is still sturdy and the piece has sentimental or monetary value. Reupholstery often costs less than buying a high-quality new chair, and you can customize the look. However, extensive repairs or rare fabrics may increase the total cost.

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done
