"Greg is such a kind-hearted, sweet and honest man. He did an amazing job setting the tile in my bathroom. I was struggling to do it myself because of the tiles, couldn’t get a straight cut, but Greg came in and got it done! Took him a few hours and I’m so grateful. The room looks amazing. I still need to grout but overall amazing job! I enjoyed his company as he’s very easy to talk to and had me laughing. I will absolutely use him again. Thank you, Greg!"

"Gainesville Carpets Plus is a very professional organization that stands behind their work. Carpet was installed upstairs and in stairwell and looks great. Vinyl flooring was installed downstairs. There were some issues originally with the installation of the flooring in the entryway due to having to cover areas where there was originally tile up against carpet. Leroy worked with us and stood totally behind the work ensuring that it be top notch and done the right way. It took a couple of return trips, and building up of the subfloor in the entryway, but the final installation was excellent. Thanks again to Leroy and Carpets Plus for a floor we are very proud of."

"The gentleman who came over to Gainesville from Ocala to refinish my very old and well-worn bathtub turned out at be a masterful artisan at this specialty. Mr. Javier was clean, polite, articulate, and respectful. He was meticulous in preparation as well as protecting the surroundings and went to work non-stop till completion with a magnificent result. I am absolutely thrilled. I was dreaming and wishing my bathtub could be transformed into like-new: shiny and sparkling again -- In less than 1/2 day, Mr. Rosario of EastCoast Resurfacing actually made it happen ! Most professional and review the final project with me as well as providing educational advice both verbally and written regarding how to keep it like new for the next 20 years! I delighted with what is seemingly a new bathtub -- resurfaced! Javier has my highest recommendation in every facet. J.D.Browning Gainesville, FL"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Yes. You can tile over tile if the old tile is in good shape, but this will also create a thicker floor. As a result, you may have to remove and readjust baseboards and other room trimmings and potentially even raise door heights to work with the higher floors. In most projects, it’s best to remove the old tile before installing a new tile floor.

Yes, tiling a bathroom is a great way to boost your home's value, especially if you are replacing old or dated flooring. Adding a new tile floor can deliver a return on investment (ROI) of around 56.4%, with some projects offering up to 100% ROI. Buyers appreciate new tile because it provides a modern look and is known for being durable, water-resistant, low-maintenance, and easy to clean. For the best results and highest return, consider hiring a professional, as tiling mistakes can be very noticeable and detract from the value.

You cannot tile directly over hot mop waterproofing because tile requires a smooth, solid surface to adhere properly. Additionally, the shower bed pan needs to be raised and sloped toward the drain to prevent water from pooling. However, you can hot mop and apply a sloped mortar bed over the top (to which the tile can then be adhered).

Bathrooms are naturally moisture-rich environments, so choose a durable, water-resistant tile for your tub surround. Porcelain and ceramic are two popular options that are also quite affordable. Glass is another good option that’s also low-maintenance—you just need a glass cleaner like you would use on the bathroom mirror. Natural stone tile is porous, but it’s still a viable option if you choose it in a glazed version.

When cleaning porcelain tiles, avoid products that contain ammonia, bleach, and other harsh chemicals. Acid-based cleansers can damage the tile, though you can clean them with a diluted mixture of one-quarter cup white vinegar mixed with one gallon of hot water. It is important always to use a soft-bristled brush or sponge, since hard bristles and steel wool can scratch the tile.
