Customers say: Quick response

"Peter is fantastic to work with and incredibly detail oriented. He refinished and repairs my 1925 original pine wood floors and repaired a few place that were damaged. He did a very thorough job and exactly what I asked for. I would highly recommend this company for any and all flooring needs. He is timely, efficient and reasonably priced. I will definitely call P K Floors for further projects."

"I cannot praise these guys enough. They installed an interior door , some cabinets and laid flooring quickly and neatly. I was surprised when they even painted the new door which I fully expected to have to do myself. They went out of their way to be sure everything was jut the way I wanted it down to the littlest detail. I cannot recommend this company enough. Prices are reasonable as well!"

Small jobs welcome

"Angel did a phenomenal job installing my kitchen cabinets. I had a custom piece made to look like a piece of furniture that everyone who sees it says it looks amazing. He was prompt, polite and very professional. When you spend a pretty penny on cabinets, it's good to know the person installing them knows what they're doing."

"Jacob was exceptionally responsive and communicative and did fantastic work. We had a short timeline to get the drywall repair done, and he worked within our schedule. Because he is local, he came 3 separate times to mud the wall and sand it until it was right. He was always on time and very dependable. The repair job looks great. I will definitely use him for future work and based on his photos on social media, I will ask him to bid on any remodels we might do in our new home."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

General contractors use subcontractors to complete specific parts of a construction project. For example, a general contractor might have construction experience but need a subcontractor to install plumbing lines in a new home.

Floor joists provide support and stability to the flooring installed above them, whether it be hardwood, tile, or carpet. They’re essentially horizontal beams that hold up the subfloor and everything that lies on top of it. Floor joists also help evenly distribute weight across their structure so that it’s shared between walls, beams, and your foundation.

You don’t need a cutting board. In fact, cutting is the original purpose of butcher block countertops. That said, wood is porous and can harbor germs. You’ll need to clean your countertop thoroughly after use. Knives can also scratch the surface. This adds to the patina of the wood, but not everyone likes the look—in which case, you may want to use a cutting board.

It is not recommended to cut or drill into LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams. As major structural components of a home, their composite structure can be compromised by alterations, which can weaken them and lead to cracking over time. If you must make modifications to an LVL beam, it is crucial to consult a structural engineer or general contractor first. A professional can advise on whether it's safe and provide specifics on the appropriate bit size, depth, and directionality for any necessary drilling.
