"Had three new sliders installed so I would not have water enter during any storms. Last year I had the original sliders in my condo during Hurricane Mathew and never had any water issues. These original sliders were cheap and not very energy efficient. So I decided to get new ones installed to become more energy efficient and to be extra safe against any possibility of water entering. I was told the sliders were energy efficient, which they are and water would not be an issue. During Hurricane Irma, I had water enter between the siders and the concrete floor. I believe Hurricane Mathew last year was stronger than Irma and I had no water enter my old cheap sliders. I contacted the company after the storm and they came out and caulked the door and was told I should not have any more issues. I asked if they were going to help with the floor repair and they told me they would check. Just this past weekend we had another good rain and I noticed the concrete at the base of the door was becoming wet. I called the company again and advised them of the issue and still waiting for a response for the floor repair and the new leak. Before this happened I was considering on getting some windows replaced, but now having second thoughts because if my old slider didn't give me problems, maybe I should just keep my old windows. What good is getting anything done if they can not hold up to the elements. I hope the company helps me out because others in my complex are looking at getting new sliders installed and they know my issue."

"GOING TO CANCUN (THANKS TO ATOZ) From the first phone call with an AtoZ representative to the finalization of our home improvement project, AtoZ's team proved to be knowledgeable in their practice. I replaced my old windows for ones more agreeable with my house's look. The old ones weren't serving us anymore plus, they were bland; my spouse and I wanted a new look for our home. New windows seem like a minuscule change at first, but once they are installed, they make a world's difference. Change yours with AtoZ, and you'll see what I mean. The installation process was quick and the AtoZ team showed me some home improvement tips as they worked. Anyway, it was only sometime after they finished that I realized just how badly keeping those old windows costed me. They were a damper to my pockets. When AtoZ tells you that switching to high impact windows saves you money, believe them! I'm saving a ton on energy... thanks to AtoZ I may be traveling to Cancun in June with the money I made from switching to new windows."

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

Yes, egress windows are grandfathered. However, this comes with some specifications. If you are remodeling a basement or adding a sleeping area, you’ll need to update the egress windows to be up to proper code. But, if you’re leaving your home as is, you do not have to adhere to these requirements.

Adding windows to a house is expensive. Budget roughly $5,800 to add a single window, and double or triple that to add two or three. In some cases, adding a single window can exceed $20,000, depending on the type of exterior wall, the size of the window, the type of window, local permit costs, and other factors.

Egress windows are typically required for basements with habitable space or living quarters. Not all basements or lower levels require egress windows. However, egress windows are required in homes with living spaces such as bedrooms and living rooms in a basement. The International Residential Code and International Building Code require sleeping rooms to have a specific size egress window. Check your local building codes to confirm the requirements in your area.

To find and hire a reputable contractor for an egress window installation, you should first research local professionals and then vet your top candidates. Start by searching for local contractors who specialize in this type of work, read their customer reviews, and examine their website and portfolio. Once you have a shortlist, contact them to ask key questions: Are you licensed and insured? What is your specific experience installing egress windows? Can you provide references from previous customers? Do you perform the work yourself or use subcontractors? What is the estimated project timeline and your current schedule? How do you handle payment?

Yes, you absolutely need a permit to add a window to your house. Your contractor can likely obtain this permit on your behalf. Ask about this when getting quotes from multiple window contractors.
