"Above and beyond this companies customer service is truly amazing. I've used a few companies for work on my house and Phoenix is the best ever. The design team understood my desires, their various crews are respectful, clean and - on time! Communication is has been an issue w/ other companies. Not Phoenix. You have your own portal for communication, design plans/pictures and a detailed calendar. So you can easily see your(my) project unfold. Very comforting. Various members of "management" show up each day with the workers to discuss the days activities. Also any concerns or changes. I highly recommend Phoenix for your next project."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Universal design costs can be minimal when you add them during construction; however, adding universal design principles to existing homes can sometimes increase renovation costs. For example, a mid-grade bathroom remodel is estimated to cost around $30,000, while a standard universal design remodel can cost closer to $40,000. Adding accessible design components can include widening hallways ($500 to $2,000), curbless showers ($2,000 to $8,000), and widening doors ($400 to $800). Keep in mind that these increased costs can lead to higher resale values because universal homes may appeal to a wider variety of buyers.

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.

Choose an architect based on their portfolio, experience with similar projects, client reviews, and whether their design approach matches your vision.

Federal and Colonial architecture are similar in that they both appear mostly utilitarian and symmetrical, but Federal architecture is a bit more ornate. Federal design often includes decorative palladium windows, window lintels, and, sometimes, columns surrounding a more decorative portico. Inside, Federal architecture is set apart by its centrally-located oval room. Additionally, Federal homes tend to have brick facades, whereas Colonial homes more often have wood siding.

The biggest upside to hiring an architect is that they will ensure an efficient building process without errors. They will also ensure your home is free from structural issues and that everything is up to building code. Many permitting agencies require architects to draw construction plans and layouts before working, so hiring an architect will also ensure your project is legal. Additionally, architects help homeowners have a clear idea of their project details before the project starts. Hence, they help unify all parties on a shared vision for the project.
