Plumbing questions, answered by experts

The use of polybutylene pipes stopped in mid-1996 in the U.S., following a class action lawsuit that was filed against polybutylene plumbing manufacturers. Homes built between 1978 and 1996 are most likely to have polybutylene plumbing.

A backwater valve’s purpose is to let the water flow in one direction. It works like a little door that allows water to flow freely in one direction but stops it from flowing the opposite way. A backflow preventer is meant to prevent water from leaving your system, locking out wastewater in the process. Backflow preventers are commonly used by city sewer systems to stop residential wastewater from entering the water supply.

The key difference between a standard spigot (or regular hose bib) and a frost-free hose bib is its design to prevent freezing and pipe bursting during cold weather. A standard spigot is a basic outdoor faucet. In contrast, a frost-free hose bib has a longer stem that extends into the heated interior of the house, placing the shut-off valve inside where it's protected from freezing temperatures. This design, often combined with a downward-sloping supply pipe, ensures water drains out of the faucet body when turned off, preventing ice formation. This allows you to leave the water supply on year-round without the risk of pipe damage, making it a valuable choice for regions with harsh winters.

It costs anywhere from $150 to $850 to fix a pipe leak, but it could cost even more depending on the damage. The most common kind of pipe leaks, which happen from clogs or grease buildup, cost less than $300 to fix. A burst pipe tends to be the most expensive because it results in significant water damage. Expect to spend $400 to $1,500 to fix the pipe, plus $1,000 to $2,000 on water damage repair.

Professionals use snakes, hydrojetting, or chemical cleaners to clear blockages effectively without damaging pipes.
