"Jonathon came out and gave me an estimate on electrical work. He was the most forthcoming, honest, concerned, professional electrician I have seen in years! If other estimates come close to Bolt's I will certainly hire Bolt."

Used them on a rental property, and since I am 800 miles away had to pick someone I got good feeling about talking to. "I had to have an insurance inspection and the electrical part failed on this 1955 house. Joel from Court Electrical did an amazing job. The had to redo both electrical panels, running wire through the ceiling with minimal impact/cutting. Had to do 4 wire runs for the range and dryer also. Also independently identified code violations outside to the air handler and exterior outlets. It was a big job and he was very knowledgeable, skillful and communicated well, explaining everything. For the size of the job the cost was very reasonable."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The standard copper wire gauge to use with any 30-amp circuit is a 10-gauge wire. The National Electric Code specifies a 10-gauge wire with appliances like water heaters running on 30 amps. If you try to use a smaller gauge wire, such as a 12 gauge, with a 30-amp breaker, you run the risk of the wire overheating and melting or causing a fire. Because of the safety hazards, the gauge of the wire is not an area to try to cut costs when connecting a 30-amp breaker to a water heater.

It might seem tempting to use 14-gauge wires for your outlets, as they can run a little cheaper. But, when it comes to electrical work, it’s best not to cut costs less you overload your circuit. A 12-gauge wire will ensure that you’re protecting the outlet (and your circuit breaker) from any potential overloads that might incur, as it can handle a little more amplitude than a 14-gauge wire.

Yes, electric-start snow blowers need to be plugged in to start, but you can unplug them and go once they’re up and running. Simply plug the snow blower into an outdoor outlet and press the start button. Once it starts, you can unplug it and use it freely. The idea for these types of snow blowers is to simplify the starting process from the typical pull-string starts.

A faulty light switch can trip a breaker due to circuit overload or a short circuit. A faulty light switch may not always trip a breaker, so don’t use that as your only sign that something’s wrong. Always investigate the cause of a switch that isn’t working properly, feels hot to the touch, or is making unusual noises.

The cost to install or replace a circuit breaker depends on the price of the unit itself and the complexity of the installation. A new circuit breaker typically costs between $10 and $100, with standard breakers being the most affordable and GFCI or AFCI types costing more. If you are upgrading to a higher amperage, a 200-amp circuit breaker can cost between $250 and $350. The average total cost for professional installation is around $700, but this price varies. A simple replacement into existing wiring will cost less than a more complex project that requires opening walls, running new wires, and securing permits.
