"The work was done perfectly. Derek is very knowledgeable and diligent. He not a only did what was expected but gave us excellent advice to change the model and color of the original faucets selected for our twin bathroom sinkk to a model and color more compatible with our other fixtures. For many, walk-in showers are worth the investment due to the increased accessibility, the minimalist aesthetic, and the ease of cleaning. They’re particularly beneficial for households that want low-threshold access for aging in place. However, if you love taking baths and want more privacy and a warmer showering space, a walk-in shower may not be the best bathroom upgrade for you.

Most modern showers have a prefabricated base made from fiberglass or plastic, such as acrylic or polyurethane. Nonetheless, concrete mortar is still the traditional, go-to base for a custom walk-in shower.

You’ll need to add a waterproofing liner or membrane between the layers of mortar to keep moisture out. From there, you can top it with whatever type of tile you like to create a spa-like custom look. Be sure to include these considerations in your budget for the cost of a walk-in shower.

A hard-to-turn shower handle is usually caused by corrosion or mineral buildup, which clogs the assembly and creates friction inside the valve. Remove the handle and look for signs of corrosion—rust-colored build-up—or mineral accumulation—white build-up. For corrosion, replacing the shower handle is your best bet. For mineral build-up, soak the handle in a solution of water and white vinegar (2:1) for an hour before reinstalling it.

Signs that your shower valve has gone bad include a variety of issues with water flow and temperature. Common symptoms are low water pressure, inconsistent water temperature, and dripping or leaking from the handle or showerhead when the water is off. You might also notice that the knob is difficult to turn or won't turn at all. Another key indicator of a bad diverter valve is water coming from both the tub spout and the showerhead simultaneously, or being unable to switch the water flow between the two fixtures. In advanced cases, the water may not turn on at all. These are all signs that the valve may need to be replaced.

It is possible to install a two-in-one unit that has both a shower and a walk-in tub so you can still have both in smaller bathrooms or provide a showerhead for those in the household who prefer taking showers. You’ll hear these referred to as walk-in tub and shower combo units. Keep in mind that these combo units can take up more space than a standard shower or tub, and you’ll most likely need to hire a pro to install one.
