Customers say: Quick response

"He answers the phone! That's a huge bonus in this area. A small thing but so appreciated. Texting with Mark usually got me a response within minutes. Even on weekends. I can't tell you how rare this is. I'm a workaholic and my job so rarely gives me a day off, so I love Mark. Hey, if you love what you do, it's not work, right? :) He never made me feel like an inconvenience as I altered my plans again and again. He's happy to offer suggestions. I mostly designed the space and he drew it to scale very nicely but I really like the fireplace he designed for us. He's also very kind. I like working with nice people and I would definitely work with Mark again."

Remodel Design questions, answered by experts

Depending on what the blueprints are for, a qualified draftsperson, contractor, or architect can draw them up. In some cases, including specialty permitting for a build, you may be required to use a licensed architect.

In many cases, a blueprint drawn up by a certified professional is required before a city or municipality approves a permit.

When you think about Arts and Crafts-style homes, you probably think of a Craftsman house or a bungalow-style Craftsman. Craftsman is one of the major styles developed during the Arts and Crafts movement, but it checks most boxes. Craftsman houses have low-pitched roofs, exposed rafters, open floor plans, and stunning wood finish.

It can take anywhere from a few days to several months to draw up architectural plans, depending on the complexity of your project. Architectural plans are highly detailed documents that take time to complete, and any changes or alterations can significantly extend how long they take.

While it’s never too early to start planning for a major home improvement project like a home addition, give yourself at least a month or two to plan and design your addition, find a contractor, and get the permits in order. For larger projects like a second-story addition that require designing with an architect, plan on three to four months of preparation.

You can draw your own house plans using three-dimensional modeling software, but in most cases, you’ll need an architect to draw up the final plans. Architects understand local building regulations and requirements, so their plans will be necessary for getting permits approved, and they’ll also ensure your home is structurally sound. DIY house plans can be a good place to start to help visualize your project, but you should always defer to a professional before trying to proceed with the project.
