"Westchase Roofing is incredible. In a day where it's so hard to find customer service...bam...there it is. They make you feel good about using them from the beginning. They have a great presentation and walk you through everything they will do for you. It doesn't stop there. They are extremely responsive, professional, and accommodating. They treat you like they should considering the money you are about to spend. I think I could have found a cheaper roofer but I guarantee we wouldn't have gotten the service that we received. Lenny kept us updated the entire way. Their crew was in and out in two days and the work is fantastic. They use excellent quality products and I have no doubt our roof will last for decades. I also know that if there are any issues, they will take care of it. This was the first step in our overhaul of the exterior of the home. Next up is painting!"

"Skylight was replaced due to leaks. New Impact resistant one fitted but due to a defective seal it still leaked. On contacting the company they had someone come back and sort it out the next day. Great service. Would highly recommend."

"We were one week from closing on the sale of our home when a wet spot appeared on sheet rock around a window in our den.  Jacobs Roofing came over on the 4th of July weekend, found that the chimney flashing was allowing some water to wick back into the soffit and down the wall.  They repaired the flashing on the side of the chimney that leaked and also made the same fix to the other side of the chimney as a precaution.  They were prompt, professional, and experienced.  We definitely recommend Jacobs Roofing."

"Excellent! From the estimate process through the final walk around, ever person I was in contact with were professional, timely, and clearly knew what they were doing. Roof looks great, clean up was great and at completion, I pointed out a couple of minor items which they resolved on the spot. I even noticed a small tear in a window screen after they left, they had a screen repair guy at my house the same day. Not the cheapest out there (I got three quotes), but you get what you pay for (including a 15 year warranty which no one else came close to). Cost included replacement of 2 skylights, which we are thrilled with. Highly recommend them."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

The most popular treatment for a skylight is skylight shades. There are five primary types: manual, motorized, blackout, cellular//honeycomb, and Venetian. Motorized skylight shades are the most convenient, especially for skylights that are higher up, but manual shades are the most cost-effective treatments. Cellular/honeycomb shades are a perfect option for anyone who wants energy efficiency and an attractive look.

Prevent future skylight issues by conducting regular inspections, ensuring gutters are clean to prevent water pooling, applying protective sealants periodically, and trimming overhanging branches that might cause physical damage to the skylight.

In most cases, installing skylights will add value to your home, making them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Buyers are often attracted to the aesthetic appeal of skylights, as they make rooms feel brighter, airier, and more spacious by introducing natural light without compromising privacy. Beyond aesthetics, skylights can offer monetary benefits by potentially reducing energy bills. Additionally, models that can be opened provide extra ventilation, which is particularly useful in hotter climates for allowing accumulated hot air to escape from the ceiling. However, the return on investment depends on several factors. To maximize value, it's crucial that the skylights are installed by an experienced professional to avoid risks like water damage, which can deter savvy buyers. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also important. Furthermore, choosing the right frame and glazing materials for your specific climate will enhance their performance and appeal. While skylights are generally seen as an asset, homeowners should also consider the initial cost, which averages around $1,500 for installation.

Common skylight issues include leaks, condensation between glass panes, damaged seals, and cracks in the glazing. Regular exposure to weather elements can lead to these problems, requiring timely attention to preserve the integrity of the skylight and the surrounding roof structure.
