I take down the doors and drawer faces and bring them home to spray with shellac primer and Benjamin Moore Aura non-toxic paints. "Silver Gates was the company that responded when I purchased a new oven from Home Depot in West Hartford. Installer had a totally incompetent assistant who broke the glass door on my old oven as he was pulling it out, and did a half-hearted job of cleaning up the broken glass mess on the kitchen floor. He even had to ask me for a dustpan and brush. I found bits of broken glass everywhere for weeks. The installer had to enlarge the existing space for the oven and did a very sloppy job leaving an inch wide gap between the oven trim and the wallboard. They charged me an extra $150 for the three minutes of work it took to enlarge the opening. Total ripoff. Don’t use Silver Gates. And don’t use Home Depot “recommended contractors” for appliance installation. Also don’t pay Home Depot to pick up your old appliance either. They charged me $25 to pick up the old appliance but nobody ever showed up despite several complaints. Ended up paying Paine’s to haul it away."

When deciding between stripping or sanding kitchen cabinets, the short answer is it depends on the condition of your cabinets and your end goal for them. If the cabinets are in fairly good condition and don’t have several layers of paint on them, sanding is a good option. On the other hand, older cabinets with more blemishes or marks will benefit from paint stripping, since it will give any future finishes a clean slate.

For a smooth and long-lasting finish, opt for an 100 percent acrylic, semi gloss latex self-leveling paint. There are many brands and types of paint to choose from, so do research before deciding which one is best for your project. Some paints even have qualities that might save you time. For example, some paints have primer so you can skip priming separately and start painting right away. 

Technically, you can paint over stained cabinets without sanding. There are specialty paints that are made precisely for not sanding cabinets. However, many interior cabinet paints work just as well. 

To make sure you have a smooth surface without sanding, you’ll need to degrease the cabinets thoroughly, add a bonding coat for strength, add primer, and then finally paint your cabinets. It’s still a process regardless of whether you sand your cabinets.

To achieve a smooth, even finish that’s free of brush strokes, spray painting is the way to go. However, it tends to use up more paint due to overspray and can have a learning curve before you perfect your technique. This isn’t to say that a brush or roller isn’t also an excellent tool, so you should test out each technique on a piece of cardboard or spare piece of wood beforehand to see which one gives you your desired look.

Liquid sandpaper is a solvent used to soften existing layers of paint and make them porous enough that you can effectively apply a new coat of paint. You rub the liquid sandpaper on, wait for it to work, and wipe it off—no literal sanding is involved. Liquid sandpaper can save time and is helpful if parts of the cabinet are hard to reach with standard sandpaper. However, like paint stripper, liquid sandpaper creates dangerous fumes and must be used with care indoors. And unlike sanding, it can’t fix any scratches or dings in your cabinets.
