"The installers came on time and were totally professional, experienced and worked continuously until the job was done. The triple pane windows are fabulous because compared to our old two pane faulty windows, not only are they solid and beautiful with no wind blowing through, but also the nearby road noise is greatly reduced. We needed to use plastic film to insulate the old windows and when the wind blew the plastic would billow like sails! The new windows make our condo seem like a true home."

Customers say: Quality work

"I retained Mary Lou (& her company Better Homes) just over 10 years ago to replace my roof, my gutters, and almost all of the windows in my house. I had been having a lot of problems with leaks in the roof and drafts from the windows. Her company came in, was extremely professional and neat, and did a great job all around. Mine was the third house in our family that she had done major work for, and we have all been extremely satisfied. This past April my bay window must have broken a seal and became foggy. I called Mary Lou, who got back to me right away and even though it took six months for the window to be replaced, the delays were mainly related to what we have been hearing all around with covid related construction issues regarding materials, transportation, etc. She kept on it and communicated regularly as to what was going on. My window was replaced right before Thanksgiving in time for the holiday and winter and looks phenomenal. I would hire them again (although knock on wood hopefully I wont have to!)"

Windows questions, answered by experts

Yes, bifold windows can open inward or outward. Your window manufacturer will label windows as “in-swing” or “out-swing,” which indicates the direction they open. If your installer is ordering windows for you, make sure they know which direction you want them to open. In-swing bifold windows will preserve as much space in your outdoor area as possible. Out-swing bifold windows are great on the second floor, where obstructions outside aren’t a concern.

Yes, triple-pane windows are more resistant to condensation. They help to reduce interior condensation that forms as a result of warmer temperatures inside your home than outside it. This makes them a good fit for cooler climates, particularly with newer, well-sealed homes that retain higher levels of moisture in the winter months.

Use a high-quality caulk with silicone around your windows, as it’s waterproof and shrink-proof. Or, you can use a caulk consisting of polyurethane or acrylic if you want to be able to paint over it. Caulk made from silicone is not paintable. Avoid using inexpensive caulk that has a resin or oil base. These caulks will not last long and may shrink and pull away from the window as temperatures go up and down.

There are several ways to reduce noise coming through your windows. You can seal gaps around the window frames with acoustic caulk or fresh weatherstripping to reduce noise and air leaks. Installing sound-dampening curtains, thick blinds, or shades can also help deaden sound vibrations. For an additional interior barrier, consider installing an acrylic or plexiglass sheet inside the window, which stifles sound while still allowing for outdoor views. Another strategy is to add external barriers, like dense shrubbery or a sturdy fence, to block neighborhood noises. If these methods are not effective enough, it might be time to install new noise-canceling windows.

Yes, you absolutely need a permit to add a window to your house. Your contractor can likely obtain this permit on your behalf. Ask about this when getting quotes from multiple window contractors.
