The materials he used were top notch as was the quality craftsmanship of the work. He was also able to get my project on his schedule super quickly (within a few days) and completed the entire raising of my existing walkway to eliminate a step and a complete resurfacing in stone of the existing cement steps in a single day. Not only was the stone work and masonry completed professionally, but the clean-up of the site was incredible as well. The surrounding lawn area was cleaner than when they showed up for the job. Stepping stones should match an average human stride, so the general rule is to place them about 24 inches between stones. However, many designs put stones closer together. If you choose to plant in between them, leave at least 6 to 8 inches between stones to give plants room to grow.

In many cases, you will need a building permit for your patio, but it depends on the type of patio. Generally speaking, any improvements to your land considered “permanent” will require a permit. On the other hand, a paver patio or flagstone patio usually sits over gravel and sand, are considered “temporary” improvements, and rarely require permits. To be safe, you should always ask your building department or your patio company if a permit will be necessary.

If you don’t put gravel under concrete, the concrete can crack, sink, bow, or crumble. Even the concrete forming process will not go as smoothly if you are working directly on the soil or bare bedrock. The lack of a proper gravel layer can also lead to drainage issues below your slab, leading to water issues throughout your lawn and around your foundation.

It is generally cheaper to build a concrete patio versus a brick patio. Basic concrete costs around $8 to $15 per square foot, while a brick patio typically ranges from $10 to $20 per square foot. The cost difference comes down to both materials and labor—pouring and finishing concrete is faster than placing each brick by hand. Brick pavers look great and last long, but they’ll cost more up front. If you’re looking to keep your budget in check without sacrificing function, concrete is usually the more cost-effective choice.
