"Extremely professional and knowledgeable service. Colby and Eli came out for an estimate on Tuesday and came back Friday for service. We walked through all vents to be cleaned and discussed the antimicrobial treatment. We had just bought the house and the ducts were never cleaned. They individually cleaned 24 vents and treated the system in just a little over 3 hours. They talked us through the whole process and showed plenty of before and after pictures. A home AC unit provides anywhere from one-half to five tons of cooling and requires approximately two to four pounds of refrigerant per ton of cooling. At approximately five to 10 minutes to fill one pound of refrigerant, a home that requires three tons of cooling will take about six to 12 pounds of refrigerant and approximately 30 minutes to two hours to completely recharge the unit.

Ideally, an AC system should never need more Freon (a popular refrigerant) because it circulates in a closed loop. However, refrigerant leaks are not uncommon and may occur gradually over 5 to 15 years. If your system has a leak, it will need to be topped up in a process known as an AC recharge. Signs of a refrigerant leak include weakened AC performance, increased humidity in your home, higher utility bills, and a hissing sound from the unit. The cost of an AC recharge will depend on the size and type of your AC unit, as well as the type of refrigerant it uses.

Both evaporator coils and condenser coils are recyclable and contain valuable, sellable metals such as copper and aluminum. Not only is it more earth-friendly to take them to a local metal recycling facility, but you can also trade them in for cash. Also, once the coils are removed from the system, they won’t have any traces of refrigerant, so you won’t have to arrange for recycling Freon or R-410A unless you’re disposing of the entire AC system.

Here’s how AC professionals will clean your AC coils:

  1. Unplug the AC unit or turn off the breaker to the unit in your circuit breaker box.

  2. Remove the faceplate.

  3. Spray a vacuum hose attachment or compressed air can to remove debris, dust, dirt, and grime.

  4. Use a soft-bristled fin comb to remove stubborn caked-on debris.

  5. Use the vacuum hose to suck up any extra debris.

  6. Take a coil-safe cleaning solution and spray it onto the coils. Try to choose a no-rinse solution.

  7. Let the solution sit for at least 15 minutes.

  8. Gently wipe away loosened grime and debris with a microfiber cloth.

  9. Reattach the faceplate, plug in your AC system, or turn the breaker back on.

It’s not customary to tip HVAC technicians, and most professionals won’t expect it. However, it’s a nice way of showing your appreciation for the work they do, especially if they come out in inclement weather or on a weekend or holiday to fix an emergency issue if your heat or AC goes out in extreme temperatures. A good tip would be between 10% to 20% of the total bill, depending on how above and beyond the tech goes for your repair and on the total cost of your HVAC repair or service. For something like a routine tune-up or scheduled maintenance, tips aren’t expected.
