Small jobs welcome

"Alex responded promptly to my request for an estimate and was able to provide me with one immediately after evaluating the site and job we wanted done. I thought the price was fair and in line with the other estimates, his responsiveness was top notch and he was almost immediately available. Once we agreed on hiring him, he and his team were able to start within the same week. We had an excellent experience throughout the process and he was able to quickly and fairly address any changes to the original plans. The guys were always right on time, incredibly efficient, and left the work area very clean every day after they were done. We have spent more time the last two weeks on our back patio than we have on our deck in any given year. He gave us an estimate on a Tuesday, we hired him the following Monday, they started on Saturday, and finished on Wednesday. I wish I had more work for them to do, and would certainly recommend Alex Masonry."

"They did a great job, the only minuses would be that our project was a small one, they did it as a side job. So we had to wait a little longer than we wanted and pay cash as we don't have checks and they didn't take cards. Other than that if we have any additional hardscaping or masonry needed, they will be our first call."

"Andri and Co provided great masonry services and did an amazing job in short period of time. They built a lake-front retaining wall that is beautiful, and the quality is great. All the neighbors now want one like this. We highly recommend Guri Masonry."

"Repaired and rebuilt front door brick steps and added 1-1/2â thick bluestone step treads. Did an excellent job and were very prompt and conscientious with their work. They were also low bid of four bids we received. Highly recommend AAAA+"

"Leonard expertly repaired my slate walks and patio that had lifted and settled over time. The process included power washing the stones, laying and leveling fresh stone dust, then replacing the stone -- including replacing those that had broken. The pricing was fair and the work outstanding. I will use Leonard again and recommend him to friends and neighbors."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Assess the specific symptoms to determine if you need masonry work. Stair-step cracks in mortar require repointing, while diagonal cracks indicate foundation settlement requiring structural repair. Spalling chimney bricks require a mason, but ceiling leaks nearby point to roofing problems. White salt deposits signal drainage issues in Old Saybrook rather than just failed mortar. Consult a professional to diagnose complex structural issues and ensure your home stays safe.

Helpful?

Schedule masonry work after any major coastal storm or flood event to address shifted stones or mortar loss. Spring is the ideal time to inspect for damage caused by the harsh CT freeze-thaw cycle. Plan chimney repairs before the fall heating season begins. If your mortar joints are recessed more than a quarter-inch from the brick face, hire a local professional to repoint the structure and prevent further deterioration.

Helpful?

After completing masonry work, secure a final inspection from the local building department for structural projects. Apply a breathable sealer to protect new mortar from coastal salt air. Check that drainage remains clear before the fall rain season arrives. Monitor the fresh mortar joints through the first Connecticut winter to confirm they cured properly. Always retain copies of your building permits and inspection approvals for your property records.

Helpful?

Applying deicing salt directly damages brick and stone surfaces. Directing downspouts against the foundation or neglecting clogged gutters forces heavy rainwater into mortar joints. Pressure washing older brick erodes the surface and drives moisture deep into the wall. Allowing ivy to grow or storing firewood against your home traps moisture and destroys masonry work. Adjust these habits to protect your Connecticut property from accelerated freeze-thaw damage.

Helpful?

A major mistake during masonry work is using modern, hard cement on historic brick homes, which causes severe cracking. Homeowners also err by skipping required structural permits or scheduling projects late in the year when Old Saybrook temperatures drop below freezing. Furthermore, repairing foundation walls without first fixing poor drainage guarantees early failure. Always have a certified specialist inspect your chimney flue before completing any exterior brick repairs.
