"Y and M Air Duct cleaning provided an important service in a way that was transparent and professional. Our house is noticeably cleaner as a result of the service. They were punctual, polite and clean. They did not cut corners and showed me what they were doing and cleaning every step of the way. The world would be better if more contractors had Y and M's work ethic."

"I called Airwise after my former HVAC contractor diagnosed my furnace as having a seized oil pump. They quoted me over $1,300 to replace the pump and perform other services necessary to repair my furnace. They installed the furnace less than 3 years ago and this was the second oil pump that supposedly seized. Needless to say, I fired them. When Airwise came to repair my furnace, the tech showed me the pump wasn't seized and stated it looked like it wasn't installed correctly. After spending less than an hour putting the burner back together correctly, we had heat again. I will be calling Airwise for my future HVAC needs."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

To diagnose a bad HVAC or AC damper, assess the airflow from your vents. For a manual damper, close it, run your system, and check for airflow. If air is still coming through the vents, the damper is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement. For an automatic damper, turn on your HVAC system and monitor the airflow and room temperature. Signs of a problem include low airflow, a room that won't maintain its set temperature, or a drafty feeling. If you suspect a faulty automatic damper, you may need to hire a professional for repairs.

Water buildup in your HVAC system is a cause for alarm. If water accumulates in your ductwork, it can drastically lower your home's air quality and create safety hazards. These risks include mold growth, damage to your HVAC system, and attracting pests that are seeking water into your ducts. Proper insulation and sealing of ducts can prevent this, and regular inspection and maintenance can address water damage problems before they become too severe.

A power outage can damage your air conditioner, just like a power surge can damage any electrical device or appliance. In most cases, your circuit breaker or built-in surge protection on your AC unit protects your AC and just needs a reset. But in other cases, it might be that your AC compressor or capacitor was blown during the power surge. You’ll need to have an HVAC professional repair or replace any AC parts.

Yes. Getting a whole-house dehumidifier can help you save money on energy bills. How? Your home automatically feels cooler when there’s less humidity in the air (“It’s the humidity that gets ya!” is such a true statement). This means that you won’t need to run your AC as much as you would if you had all that extra humidity in your home.

Aside from needing HVAC repair, there are times when you may need to replace your unit. HVAC replacement costs $5,000 to $12,500. Here are some telltale signs that your HVAC unit is going bad:

  • Your unit is 10 years or older.

  • Your home is very humid.

  • The unit keeps cycling without producing cool air.

  • You need to repair the unit frequently.
