Customers say: True professional

"We recently had custom built-in bookshelves designed and installed by CT Yankee Crafts, and we couldn't be happier. From start to finish, the experience was an absolute pleasure. Nick was very communicative throughout the whole process, and he listened to our vision, then translated it onto paper and then into a beautiful masterpiece and a focal point in our new home. The best part is filling them up! Watching our book collection find its new home on these gorgeous, sturdy shelves has been so satisfying. It has completely transformed the room into a cozy sanctuary. Highly recommended for any custom woodwork!"

"Kurt did an excellent job repairing our windows and support beams. He is highly detail-oriented and able to match woodworking styles and colors. Kurt was able to repair extensive rot damage and made the windows look better than they did before. He is very tidy and always communicated very well. He is very friendly and pleasant, and upfront with what’s going on. I would recommend him without hesitation."

"We hired Arnold's Masonry and Construction LLC. They repaired our front steps and installed a sidewalk and borders. They were very polite, friendly, and professional. They took great pride in their work, and are very knowledgeable about the products and the work to be done. The work area was left very clean. We are very happy with the beautiful work that was done. It looks amazing! It was a pleasure working with Arnold's. We highly recommend them. J & B. Lewis"

"Excellent. George and his people are great. The woodwork was efficiently and well done. The painting was not perfect, but overall excellent. (I would rate the painting a B or B+ and woodwork A A- which is why I kept the rating as Excellent. Pleasure to work with - only problem was availability! Scheduling was tough, but he was always responsive!!!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

While carpenters and woodworkers perform similar tasks, their focus differs. A carpenter is typically responsible for the structural woodwork involved in construction, such as framing, installing sheathing, hanging kitchen cabinets, and installing trusses. In contrast, a woodworker handles more intricate and custom projects, like building custom furniture, installing wainscoting, and creating detailed interior trim and moldings. Based on these definitions, many woodworkers can perform the tasks of a carpenter, but it's always best to discuss your specific project with a professional to ensure they have the necessary skills.

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Tipping contractors, builders, or general contractors is not customary or expected. Unlike many service professions where tipping is built into the payment structure, construction professionals typically charge a full rate for their services. However, you may choose to tip a worker for exceptional service, such as if they go above and beyond, stay late to meet a deadline, or work on a holiday weekend. Before offering a tip, it's a good idea to ask about the company's policy, as some prohibit their employees from accepting gratuities. If you want to show your appreciation for a job well done without giving a cash tip, consider writing a positive online review or offering to serve as a reference for potential new customers.
