"Not the best, but I guess not the worst either.
They did the door blower test which revealed different air leaks in the house. They sealed around some of the doors in the home, installed some door sweeps, caulked around baseboard registers etc. However, the work was far from consistent and less than professional in quality.
There are 15 registers / returns in the home and we were told they would caulk around them all, they caulked around 7. 2 of which the caulking was so thin that it cracked before the next morning.
There are 3 sinks in the house where pipes were supposedly "foamed and insulated" on their report. There is no additional insulation visible anywhere that I can see.
We are entitle up to 40 CFL light bulbs in the home, however, even the 30 they said they changed were not completed.
For example:
-there are 2 nightstand lamps in the bedroom. One lamp received a CFL and the other wasn't touched.
-there is a hallway ceiling light that was supposed to be changed out with CFLs, but still has the same old bulbs.
-downstairs bathroom still has all three original bulbs
-two bedroom ceiling fans that take regular "A" type bulbs all have the same bulbs
I sent an email to the gentlemen who came out to the house asking if we could at least receive the extra bulbs. He did respond and said yes, but never got back in touch with me. After the general overall experience I did not bother chasing after them for a few more dollars worth of bulbs. However, the whole point is not the money, its the fact that these were all listed on the report and not completed accordingly.
They did recommend an insulation company to come in and give us a quote and also told us about different programs offered from the state which would allow us access to rebates for making home energy improvements. All in all, I guess it helped us to know where the air leaks were in the house, but the overall performance of the team was simply sub-par. They were nice, polite and somewhat informative but by no means "wowed" me.

"The exterior door from my kitchen developed a crack. The sill had become warped from water damage and the lower part of the cedar frame around the door was rotted. Max suggested that I also add a storm/screen door, to insulate, protect from further water damage and allow me to enjoy more light and breezes. He did the work himself, with an assistant. He worked carefully and neatly, removing all the old parts and expertly fitting the new frame and doors. He always arrived punctually and always is reachable by cell phone. The job was done exceptionally well and I am very pleased. The storm door was a great suggestion. We plan to have him do another project in the near future."

"
Troy was great! He is a little hard to get a hold of, but when he said he would show up, he did or called and told us he was running late every time. Our job was time and materials, so there was no bid before hand.Troy worked very hard while in the house, was professional and polite, did very clean work and left the job site cleaner than when he arrived. We scheduled Troy to come in to move all the water pipes and develop a solution to poor insulation / moisture barrier from when the bathroom was added to the house in the 1970s.  Troy took two days to do this part as he ran in to some problems that were not his fault (The house is 137 years old - this happens every time).  Troy was very creative in solving the moisture barrier and insulation problem.  He did excellent work replacing the sub floor and was able to match it perfectly so that the new tile floor would match grade level to the floor outside the bathroom.  He did use a sub-contractor for the pipe work, but Troy was always there while he was working.  The only thing negative was they forgot to put escutcheons around the pipes before they welded the valves on (Minor, but irritating). We then had to book Troy to return when we were done with replacing the tile backer board and installing tile floor and subway tiles on the wall.We booked him to return in 4 weeks (We are weekend warriors -  We knew it would take us at least this long).Troy returned as scheduled to complete the job.  He stayed and worked for 10 hours till the job was done.  He installed the new toilet and the pedestal sink we had purchased.  We also had him go ahead and replace all the hardware in the shower and install new shower doors.
Troy works very methodically - He may seem slow, but when he does it, he does it right (unlike other contractor / handymen we have used)
We are very happy over all with the work that Troy did and will use him again."

"The technician who came was a pleasant, competent professional who examined the unfinished attic to evaluateit w/r/t insulation only or insulation as part of a full finishing of the space. He took measurements and scratched out some information on his pad.. I told him that I intended to review my options before any decision. I offered payment at that time and he told me there was no charge for this service. It struck me as odd that he told me that what I had agreed to pay $19.00 for was actually free but I asumed billing would accompany an actual report/proposal. A month on I've never seen anything like a report although I have been charged via credit card for the inspection service. Perhaps the report-recommendation is still on its way? PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS REVIEW FORM REQUIRES A YES/NO HIRE AGAIN RESPONSE. I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED TO ANSWER UNDECIDED."

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

"The initial consultation was so informative - Dennis taught us everything we needed to know about windows, gutters and insulation! He took the time to answer our questions and promoted their quality products.   He explained the benefits of spending a little more money on quality windows and having professionals install them so they get done correctly the first time.  From there, everyone we spoke to or dealt with  in the company was so pleasant and professional.  The foreman (Gil) was well-versed in lead paint removal safety standards and did an absolutely beautiful job on the outside trim for the windows.  He's very skilled and finished the complete install over 4 days with the help of only one other equally skilled craftsman.  Any issues we had with the installation (all minor) were promptly corrected to our standards.   He also installed our attic insulation quickly which was no more than a couple of hours' work.  The gutters were installed in 1 day by another 2-person team that was equally skilled and hard-working.  They were also a delight to work with.  I'm sorry that I can't remember their names to give them a shout-out because they were very lighthearted and funny.   There were some miscommunications between the scheduler and the specialists, however, which did affect our schedule.  We're fortunate though that one of us is a homemaker and were able to adjust easily.  We understand that things don't always go as planned, but last-minute changes can be hard for some people don't have the luxury of an open schedule.  A stricter adherence to the schedule and clearer communications in regards to scheduling would have been ideal, but overall we were so delighted to work with this company and look forward to working with them again for our siding!  They have quality products, a skilled and professional staff, and they're local!  Definite recommendation for anyone looking for quality home improvement - worth every penny!!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

A DIY blown-in insulation project in a typical attic should take you no more than a week to complete. Experienced homeowners can blow an entire attic in one or two days.

Yes, insulating ductwork in a crawl space is a worthwhile investment, especially if you live in a colder climate or run your air conditioning for most of the year. Uninsulated ducts can lose up to 30% of their heating and cooling efficiency, which can significantly impact your electricity bill. The project is a relatively small investment and typically only takes a few hours. It's a particularly simple add-on if you are already hiring someone to insulate the entire crawl space. An added benefit is that insulated ducts put off less hot or cold air, making them less attractive to pests.

Three signs that you need crawl space insulation are drafts, high energy bills, and mold. Drafts can start in crawl spaces and cause hot or cold air to spread to the rest of your home through holes in the floors and walls. And even if your entire home is well-insulated, you can still feel an unchecked draft from your crawl space and in your utility bill. Uninsulated crawl spaces can let in air and moisture, and because they’re built directly on the ground and difficult to dry out, they are hotspots for mold and mildew.

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is a rating that describes how well a building material or assembly blocks airborne sound. A higher STC rating means less noise will pass through the material, providing better sound reduction. This rating system applies to various building components, including windows, doors, flooring, drywall, and insulation.

For context, a typical single-pane window has an STC rating of around 25 (where normal conversations are audible), while a well-sealed, double-pane window can exceed STC 45 (blocking loud speech and most music). It is important to note that for some products, like soundproofing drywall, the STC rating refers to the entire wall system, not just the individual panel.

Additionally, STC ratings are most effective for measuring sound reduction at mid-to-high frequencies, such as human speech, and may not accurately reflect how well a material blocks low-frequency sounds like bass music or thunder. Because of these factors, it is recommended to consult a professional to determine the right STC-rated materials for your specific soundproofing needs.

Insulation can be made of cellulose, fiberglass, polyurethane, polystyrene, or mineral wool. Radiant barriers are often made of aluminum or other similarly reflective materials, but they will need to be paired with something else because they don’t provide heating benefits. Cellulose is among the most eco-friendly options and may be recycled when it’s past its shelf-life, whereas polyurethane and polystyrene both emit harmful compounds and will need to be handled with care during installation.
