"A hard rain caused the patio drain of our 100+year old house in Brooklyn to back up, flood the patio and prevent us from flushing our toilets. (You said you wanted detail so here goes.)  Instead of going into the sewer, the contents of the toilets emptied onto the patio. (Gasp!)   After one plumber worked for three hours he couldn't solve the problem, and two other plumbers (one from Angie's List) passed on even trying. One plumber said we need a "drain specialist" and referred us to Kenny at Response Service Group.
When I called Kenny his response was immediate, detailed and professional. He took time over the phone to ask me several questions to help him assess our situation. After ten minutes we set an appointment for the next day and Kenny was there the next morning. He first checked out our house and plumbing set-up, and then he and his assistant set to work with a "super-snake."  Within two hours he had cleared the clog and we were happily flushing our toilets again and the patio drain was dry as a bone. Plus, he took extra care as he worked inside our kitchen and bathroom. I highly recommend Kenny and Response Service Group to anyone who needs a top-notch plumber or drain/sewer cleaning specialist.

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Since vinegar is a weak acid with a pH of two to three, it’s generally safe for septic systems. It won’t eat away at the good bacteria in your septic tank and can help break down the sludge, which is its bottom layer. However, like with everything in life, moderation is key.

A septic tank always has some amount of liquid in it—which should usually be 8 to 12 inches from the top of the tank. If the liquid level is higher than that or is overflowing the drainage pipe that leads out to the leach field, the tank may be too full and in need of pumping.

Yes! Toilet paper can be flushed if you use a septic tank. While unique toilet papers designed to be used with septic tanks are available, many people have no problem flushing regular toilet paper with a septic tank, so long as you don’t flush too much toilet paper all at once. Do not flush any type of baby wipes or bathroom wipes, even if they say “flushable.”

When your septic system is failing, you’ll probably smell it. Common signs of a septic system failure include sewage odors in the home or around the yard, flooding in the yard above the septic tank or in the leach field, and wastewater or even raw sewage backing up into your home’s drains.

A household of four can easily fill a 1,000-gallon septic tank within a week. It may be 10 to 14 days for smaller households. But the reason why you don't need weekly pumping is because the tank's contents eventually reach the overflow pipe. They flow down this pipe to the absorption area whenever water is used in your home. The tank keeps working at this full level until it's pumped again.
