"Nixon came to look at leak in the ceiling. He gave me a fair quote, and left a temporary solution since places had to dry out before he could do the needed repair. Today the repair was completed well and promptly. He and his workers were polite, neat and pleasant. Will hire him again, I'm sure."

"Tom and Daniel are perfectionists. They scraped off popcorn from 2 rooms, repaired drywall from a room that had very damaged walls and painted the ceilings. They were very neat and clean, fast and a pleasure. I cannot say enough about them and the exemplary work they do. I will definitely call them again!"

"I closed on a house that had wall-to-wall carpet in most of the rooms a week before going on vacation. I contacted Five Star and Ricardo responded right away, we scheduled for him to come see the job that needed to be done (he was very punctual), and did the work while I was away and the house was still empty. I had 2 other estimates and his price was the most reasonable. Since the house was empty and some of the work had to be done at night there were some minor issues such as a few staples (literally about 5) that were not fully removed and a spot that was missed due to lack of adequate lighting. Ricardo showed up to take care of those issues himself. Ricardo was alway courteous and professional."

"To begin you should know that there were 4 people living in the house at the time of the project. Project began later than expected, December instead of November, BUT it was well worth the wait to have Gilson doing the job. You should know that he does not leave a job until he personally is satisfied he has completed the job and THEN, when the customer is totally satisfied the job is complete. 4 bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths, 2 offices, laundry room, long hallway, mud room, foyer, family room, cathedral ceiling great room, tons of doors and windows including 3 exterior doors. Gilson was very considerate about working "around" us living here during the job. He was also extremely concerned about the order in which rooms were to be painted particularly since the late start date coincided with the holidays. Gilson is meticulous and a consummate professional. He never left any questions to guessing and asked for clarification before picking up his paintbrush. His eye for detail included so much more patching than I even imagined necessary. He considered my questions carefully and offered opinions when I asked him. He has a keen eye for detail and colors. He has an exceptional talent for the division of colors when open floor plan room division can be difficult to manage. We supplied the paint, he supplied the tools and additives. His paint estimates were spot on and there is no excessive amount of paint leftover. We were interested in using consumer brands of paint and unlike many other painters, Gilson did not require us to use a specific name brand. In fact, he commented on the quality of the Lowes/Home Depot paints which he had never before used. At the end of every day he cleaned and tidied the rooms he was working in. He was never intrusive while working and oftentimes was so quietly involved that we didn't even know he was in the house. I have already recommended him to friends and would definitely ask him back to do additional work."

"Our bathroom renovation was motivated by a desire to get rid
of the pink tiles on the walls and floor. It soon became clear that we would
have to go further than simply tile replacement. In the process of seeking a
contractor we were fortunate to find LAV. Luis? price estimate was competitive
and he brought an attention to detail and professionalism to the work. Every
day he put down drop clothes and cleaned up at the end of the day. We hit a
snag requiring the replacement of the subfloor but since he had agreed to
replace it if it needed it in our contract there was no extra charge. The next
big problem was the shower pan. We had had that replaced twice in the 20 years
we?ve lived in the house and were hoping to avoid that expense a third time.
Luis showed us that it had not been done correctly and was highly likely to
leak. Working with a first rate plumber he replaced the pan at a very fair
price. While shopping for fixtures prior to the start of work a store associate
showed us a $100 insert for the shower wall to hold shampoos, etc. I sent Luis
a text asking if he could do that. He responded nearly immediately that I should
save the $100 and he would build the insert. He attached pictures of inserts he
had done previously. We?ve got a great looking insert and a brand new bathroom.
The only thing not replaced was the ceiling. I highly recommend LAV.

"The service was good. They were on time. They actually came 30 minutes earlier and then they installed my kitchen cabinets. They did perfectly fine. They were very professional. They even brought their own tools. Everything was nice and neat. They did a good job. I would recommend them to anybody."

"Max and his team did a wonderful job rebuilding our porch. He guided us through the process of selecting materials and design. The work team left everything tidy during the project and did not make much noise considering the work which was done. Max responded quickly to our questions throughout the process and was a real pleasure to work with. We have received many compliments on the outcome of the project. The porch looks great and really adds to the appeal of the house."

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

In most cases, it is worth removing popcorn ceilings because they are considered outdated and can make a home more difficult to sell. Buyers typically prefer a smooth, modern finish, so removing the texture can increase a home's value and appeal. The necessity can sometimes depend on the housing market; in a competitive market, buyers may be more willing to overlook minor renovations. The most critical factor is the potential presence of asbestos, which is common in older popcorn ceilings and poses a significant health hazard if the material deteriorates. If you know your ceiling contains asbestos, you are required to disclose this when selling, which can be a major deterrent for buyers. In this situation, it is highly recommended to have a professional remove or encapsulate the ceiling to resolve the issue before it impacts the sale.

On average, repairing a ceiling costs anywhere from $450 to $1,750. However, there are many variables that can impact the price of this project. For example, the type of ceiling material, type and extent of the damage, and local labor rates all affect your costs. Holes and cracks are less expensive to fix, while structural issues and water damage are pricier problems.

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity due to their outdated appearance, difficult maintenance, and potential health risks. Ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos, which poses a serious health hazard if disturbed. As design trends have shifted towards sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now favor smoother ceilings that offer a cleaner look and easier upkeep.

However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as acoustic dampening and the ability to hide imperfections. Some people also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective option. Ultimately, whether a popcorn ceiling is 'bad' depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and the overall aesthetic of the home.

The cost of application ranges from $1 to $3 per square foot, depending on the presence of asbestos and the difficulty of removal.

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity for several reasons, though opinions on them can vary. However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as excellent acoustic properties for noise reduction and the ability to hide imperfections.
