Lyon Tree Care

"We've used James with Lyon Tree Care on 2 occasions. The first time we had dead trees in our residence in Colorado Springs. There were 3 large dead trees that could've come down on our house. There is not much room between our property and the neighbor's. Without a hitch, the trees were brought down and did not cross the property line. It was exceptional. The 2nd time was at our rural mountain property. We had a tree approximarely 60 feet tall. It was a dead pine tree that would have eventually taken out the power lines and our house. The winds can get high at 10,000 feet in elevation and it was scary to watch that tree sway. James came out and like the expert he is, climbed the tree and began cutting it down from top to bottom. We couldn't take our eyes off of him. It was awesome to watch him work. He literally saved our house. I would recommend him time and time again!! He's also worth every penny and is reasonably priced."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Completely topping a plum tree is a risky business. Cut too much, and you’ll kill your tree. That said, you do need to trim the top of your tree to encourage bushy growth, maintain your tree’s vase shape, and limit size.

A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall. As it grows, cut it back 12 to 20 inches until it reaches its desired height. Never prune more than one-third of the new growth.

Maple trees start the growing season by developing small groups of red flowers where the tree's fruit, the samaras, will appear in the coming weeks. Later in spring, the samaras, which many call whirlybirds or similar names, develop into single-winged seed carriers that spin when falling or drifting in the wind.

Since each tree is different, it’s impossible to say how long a dead tree can remain on your property. While it could be days, months, or even years, it’s highly likely that, at some point, the tree will fall. In the meantime, dying or dead trees can become a haven for pests, so it’s best to have them removed sooner rather than later.

Any cutting of tree roots can hurt or kill a tree, which is why it's recommended you don’t do it unless the roots are damaging or invasive on a nearby structure like your home. You should never cut more than 15 percent of above-ground tree roots at one time. If you have any questions about cutting tree roots, contact your local arborist.

Trees naturally want to grow upward, so one may straighten all by itself, though this only comes into play when a tree is leaning just a small amount. For trees growing into an awkward position or those leaning heavily in one direction, the above steps are necessary to ensure the tree gets back on the right path. This also holds true for trees planted in a spot with unstable soil.
