"I had Chimney Sweep Pros come out to clean our dryer vent, and I?m so glad I chose them! They were punctual, professional, and did a very thorough job. They showed me the buildup that had been causing longer drying times and explained how important it is for preventing fire hazards ? something I hadn?t even realized. Not only is my dryer working better than ever, but I also feel much safer knowing everything is cleaned properly. The technician was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole process easy and stress-free. Highly recommend Chimney Sweep Pros for anyone needing dryer vent maintenance ? truly top-notch service."

"I hired Shawn after getting several quotes for a fireplace install. Shawn had by far the best price for the install. But service did not reflect the lower cost. From estimate through install, Shawn was always honest and open about the process. I have an older house with an old small fireplace and Shawn found a great fireplace to fit my space. He works with knowledge and integrity. He did a great job installing a new gas line as well as the electrical work required for the fireplace blower. I'd recommend Shawn for all your fireplace needs."

"It was a great experience working with David from Hearthfire Construction. We had a front walkway that had been lifted and damaged by a large tree and needed to be removed. Then a new front walkway had to be designed and poured. David was very knowledgeable and explained the whole process carefully. He was on time and his price was reasonable. His work was very good. I will definitely use him again when I need any concrete work done."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

Both wood-burning stoves and fireplaces can emit smoke and other combustion gases that are harmful to human health. According to the American Lung Association, wood smoke can lead to coughing and wheezing as well as long-term health impacts like increased risks for heart attacks and stroke.

Newer models meet the modern efficiency standards set in 2020 by the Environmental Protection Agency for cleaner burning, more efficient wood stoves. Regular maintenance can also minimize smoke.

A chimney cap costs about $300 on average to install, with prices ranging from $75 to $1,000. The final cost depends on several factors, including the professional you hire, the accessibility of your chimney, the cap's material and size, whether any repairs are needed, and if it requires custom fabrication. Chimney caps are usually made from galvanized steel, stainless steel, or copper. Copper caps are the most expensive, followed by stainless steel and then galvanized steel. Excluding labor, average material costs are around $100 for galvanized steel, $250 for stainless steel, and $600 for copper. You may also face additional costs, such as hiring a chimney sweep to clean the chimney before the cap is installed.

One of the best ways to know your chimney is good to go on any given night is to simply look up into your flue with a flashlight. If you see a thick buildup of creosote—a shiny, dark substance that looks like tar—it’s best to have your fireplace professionally cleaned before you go ahead with the burn. Additionally, having your fireplace professionally inspected once per year can also help increase your peace of mind and keep your family and your home safe.

A quality pellet stove that receives proper maintenance can last between 15 and 20 years, while most will last at least 10 years. The exact lifespan depends on factors like frequency of use and how well the stove is cared for. Proper maintenance—such as periodically cleaning the vents, vacuuming the ash pan, and refreshing the pellets as needed—can significantly extend its life, making it a worthwhile long-term investment.
