"Our entire experience has been wonderful. Jim called us immediately and has been very professional, arranged to come over right away and review and quote our drywall repair project. Jim gave us a quote the very next morning which we felt was very fair so we approved his quote right away. The very next day - Patrick started the project. Patrick started our project by protecting all of our wood floors and putting up plastic sheets to protect all furniture - he has excellent skills in repairing drywall - we highly recommend Patrick. Eugene joined Patrick to also repair drywall and he as well has excellent skills in drywall repair - we highly recommend Eugene. Eugene also installed insulation on the wall behind our furnace and hot water heater to put up a sound barrier to any noise the equipment gives out. Timeframe from the moment I ask for drywall repair until the project was completely finished - Monday we requested help - Tuesday Jim reviewed project - Wednesday We received quote - Thursday work began - Saturday project completed! Everyone was friendly, professional, and careful."

"Brad did a great job with my three ceiling repairs, which involved replacing sections of drywall, all of which were totally unnoticeable when he was done. He kept any cleanup on my part to a bare minimum, which is hard to do with drywall. He was on time, didn't take breaks, didn't use his phone and did what he said he would do. He was very personable, too. Good job!"

"Speaking of integrity and an extraordinary skill set that overshadows the concerns that you might have had, they vanish once you have rendered the effective decision of summoning the Home Skills Improvement LLC for any related projects that need your immediate attention. We had our fences installed, the drywall fixed, the bathroom counter installed, and several other little and big projects that needed fixing, with their help. They were there with their unwavering smile and timely attempts to respond, each time in an awed manner. They were a rare find, and once we found them, they seemed to be a call away for us each time. Couldn’t be happier to recommend Steven and team to y’all."

"PatchMaster repaired the drywall in a 3x4' portion of the ceiling that had a water leak repaired. the estimation process was simple. Russel and I exchanged text and photos, and he came to the house to confirm his understanding of the scope of the work. I was on their schedule a week later, and the drywaller arrived a few minutes early. He installed furniture and carpet protection from the job site all the way to the door to ensure that he kept the hours clean. His demolition was fast and he let me inspect the are in the cavity before install the patch so I could quickly check for other plumbing issues. His patch work and texturing were also quick and tidy, and the match to the surrounding/untouched ceiling looks pretty good. Over all, I am very happy with PatchMaster and will use them again for drywall needs. Their price was fair as compared to several other quotes I received. I felt that Russel demonstrated the most comprehensive understanding of the work and what needed."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

While you can put new drywall over old drywall, it’s not always the best option. In some cases, drywalling over drywall can make it harder to find wires and pipes behind your walls and conceal more serious problems with your walls. It can also make the room smaller. On the plus side, putting drywall over drywall can improve soundproofing and insulation. Plus, it’s often less expensive than tearing down and adding new drywall.

You can take a few steps to save money on drywall installation, even when hiring a professional to do the bulk of the work for you. These ideas include the following:

  • Buy the drywall and other materials yourself to avoid product markup and delivery fees

  • Ask about discounts if you use the same company to tape, spackle, and paint

  • Hire drywall professionals in the winter when demand is the lowest

  • DIY as many parts of the project as possible, like replacing insulation and painting

Drywall is safe to cut as long as you follow proper procedures, such as wearing personal protective equipment and using the right tools to score and cut the drywall. When cutting new drywall, it can release dust with silica and other compounds that could pose health risks. Leave cutting drywall to the pros, or wear a high-quality respiratory mask, goggles, and other PPE when handling drywall.

Plastering and skimming are two different techniques for finishing walls. Plastering involves applying a thick layer of a plaster mixture—typically containing gypsum, lime, cement, sand, and water—to create a new surface. This process often requires multiple coats and is used for repairing significant damage or creating decorative textures. Skimming, on the other hand, is a technique that involves applying a thin layer of drywall compound or joint compound over an existing surface to smooth it out, covering minor imperfections, small cracks, or uneven textures for a polished look. Plastering is generally more costly and labor-intensive than skimming. Although some people use the terms interchangeably, they refer to different processes and materials.

Whether you can reuse a drywall anchor depends on its type, material, and how it is removed. Plastic anchors, such as expansion or self-drilling types, are generally considered single-use because they are designed to expand and are likely to break or become deformed upon removal. Metal anchors, like toggle bolts, are more durable and can often be reused if they are not damaged during extraction. However, with toggle bolts, the toggle mechanism can fall inside the wall when the bolt is removed, making it difficult to retrieve. If an anchor is damaged or must be cut for removal, it cannot be reused regardless of its material.
