"Tom was great at installing my RV outlet. Out of the 3 different quotes I received, he was able to get it done without trying to talk me into more expensive options. He was also accommodating with my somewhat busy schedule and very responsive throughout the install planning process. I would highly recommend Productive Electric."

"Installed a 12 circuit generator cutover panel. Works great. Would have preferred the cables to be behind the drywall. But a solid job that passed Jeffco and Xcel inspections easily."

"I had a tricky problem where the electrical service line into an old 2-story brick house had almost pulled the anchor brick for the strain cable out of the wall! They responded quickly, gave me an estimate and figured out a solution which utilized a closet inside the house to install a bracket on the outside of the house, bypassing the brick section altogether. A clean install which should last (another 100 years?). They also tapped the errant bricks back into line so I didn't have to do any brick repair. Thanks guys!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

To power a central air system during a power outage, the whole-house generator will need to be at least 5,000 watts, and this number will significantly increase for larger units. Check the specific wattage requirements of your AC unit to choose the right generator size. Consider consulting a generator installer to ensure your whole-house generator meets your electrical load needs.

DIY is possible for basic setups. Professional installation ensures safe and proper electrical connections.

In many cases, yes. There are models called dual-fuel generators and fuel switches, but only between certain types of fuel. For example, with the right setup you can convert a generator from natural gas to propane. Some allow switching between diesel and gasoline. There are even tri-fuel generators available in some cases, which adds a large layer of security if you are worried about fuel availability in times of crisis. Always check your generator capabilities and manual instructions before trying to switch fuels. Some generators can use another fuel but may need a fuel conversion kit to prep them first.
