"I asked Rusty to come out to see my deck and discuss what maintenance and repair needs to be done now to help the deck last. I showed him what I thought my problem areas and concerns were. He reassured me that my deck was in better shape than I thought and pointed out a few boards that should be replaced. The best part was he gave me a great education and advice about what I can do to take better care of my deck going forward - not just what to do, but what not to do as well. Very friendly and professional. I really appreciated his time and expert advice."

"Very Professional and delivered everything they promised. Had them out to do some repair and stain the entire deck. They got it done as promised and left the job cleaner than when they started it. Even helped move heavy items out of the way for us. I would recommend David and team for any deck work I or my friends have in the future. Truly a 5 Star Company."

"This is the second project where I had worked with Jim and his crew, and I highly recommend their work and professionalism. Jim has great communication about the project timeline and takes time to check in along the way to ensure that the work was progressing as we had envisioned. Any changes (on my part) was handled with utmost attention and Jim was very good about providing alternate ideas as well as educating us on the added time to the project. We absolutely love our new metal deck railing and the updated Trex stairs and fascia boards makes this a truly maintenance free deck. I would certainly work with Jim for any future projects."

"Job involved rebuilding my deck because I wanted to install Trex which is much heavier than wood, requiring 12 in. joist spacing vs. 16 in. I also wanted to use my existing metal railing, so Deck Doctor (DD) workers had to build the new deck with exact measurements to the old deck which also included an odd angle on one side. DD workers also had to take down a heavy scaffolding type structure that I had on one side of the deck to hold a sunshade, and then put it back up again in a precise location so it would bump against my deck rollout shade. They poured concrete footings and a concrete pad at the bottom of the stairs which I didn't have before. They also attached a lattice skirt (which I bought and stained). I love the new deck and think they did a great job. Justin, the sales rep, was great to work with, answered all my questions, and gave assurances that they would make sure I was happy with the final product. However, Justin is very busy, so it's helpful to have a bit of patience and a willingness to text. There were a couple of surprises which required more work and more material expense due in part to my change of mind and in part to having to construct the stair support from scratch which wasn't anticipated. This increased the cost so just be aware that the bids can't always anticipate everything. Still, I think the price was reasonable given that Trex is very expensive and was a significant component of the total cost. The DD workers were very respectful, cleaned up every day and kept track of all the details of constructing the deck identical to the old one. My deck dimensions are 18' by about 13'. I would hire Deck Doctor again."

"I rarely take the time to rate a service provider but it would be negligent of me not to praise the work that Mickey Regan did for us. He not only did an incredible job repainting our house and barn but he also did an amazing job of replacing all the rotted out wood and deck. His attention to detail was beyond compare. We are bringing him back to remodel our master bathroom as well as paint the interior of the house. I would recommend him in a heartbeat for any home repair."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Cold temperatures can make your deck boards contract. If they don’t contract evenly, they can put pressure on the deck screws and cause them to pop out, making a noticeable sound. Winterizing your deck can help prevent this from happening.

When building an outdoor or deck gate, it's crucial to use durable wood that can withstand harsh weather conditions like sunlight, rain, wind, and snow. Redwood and cedar are excellent choices as they naturally resist decay. While redwood is considered more elegant, cedar is a more affordable option. Other suitable woods include oak and pressure-treated pine, which is specifically treated to resist rot. Although some softwoods like pine are popular, untreated softwoods such as pine and spruce should generally be avoided for outdoor projects because they are susceptible to damage from water, rot, and the sun. Ultimately, it's wise to consider your local climate when selecting the right wood for your gate.

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

Yes, it is possible to build a small, basic deck for $5,000, particularly if you use less expensive materials and a simple design. To stay within this budget, consider a size under 10x12 feet and use affordable materials like pressure-treated wood or cedar. While the general cost for deck building ranges from $4,350 to $12,560, with an average around $8,200, some projects can be completed for as little as $4,350. You can also save on labor costs by doing the work yourself, but be aware that mistakes could end up costing more than hiring a professional. A contractor may have a higher upfront cost, but they can ensure a safe, stable deck that will last.
