"Elevated Environments is an amazing company! We have a small yard that we wanted to get sod installed. I am thrilled I found Elevated. I believe we received the same attention and care that someone with a huge job would receive. From the very first phone call with Lizzy, we felt completely taken care of and respected. She is professional and friendly; she is very easy to work with. The great service didn’t stop there… Nick and his team were all GREAT! When they were at our house the entire team's full attention was on our yard. The sod was laid several days earlier than I expected. They didn’t just put the sod down—they prepped the ground and tilled in 6 inches of organic compost. After laying the sod, they fertilize to give the grass the best chance possible. Without hesitation, I completely recommend Elevated Environments!"

"We have been using Chris for 3 years. Chris and his crew are professional and take pride in their work. We asked Chris to look at some damage a fiber optic company did and repaired. Chris came out immediately with no questions asked. We are so happy we have Chris and his crew for landscapers. Terry & June"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can hydroseed with a garden hose, but you’ll need a tank or other large vessel for mixing the slurry, then a pump to send the slurry through the hose for spraying. Making your own hydroseeding unit can work, but it’s not usually worth the effort and supplies unless you already have them.

The best time to plant a tree is in the spring, so the roots have time to grow into the surrounding soil before winter sets in. Some people recommend planting in the late fall. However, planting in the spring reduces the stress on the tree, as it will be emerging from dormancy, giving it the full spring and summer ahead to acclimate and put down roots into the soil.

The best way to landscape your front yard on a budget is to invest in hiring a professional for hardscaping—things like upgrading walkways, redoing driveways, and installing partitions around garden beds. You can often do the softscaping yourself—think laying down mulch, caring for your lawn, removing weeds, and planting flowers and shrubs. It’s also almost always worthwhile to pay a professional for routine yard maintenance, as this dramatically improves curb appeal and delivers above 100% ROI in most cases.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

If you’re hiring a landscaper to plant the garden of your dreams, you do not need to provide them with plants that you bought yourself from a nursery. While you certainly can provide your landscaper with plants, keep in mind that some nurseries provide discounts to landscaping companies, therefore potentially lowering your materials cost. Beyond the cost of the plants themselves, you need to have additional materials like topsoil and mulch for the project. Most likely, your landscaper can get a discount on these materials as well, so it’s worth speaking with them before making any large purchases.
